DCEU Plans

News of a DCEU adaptation of Zatanna was confirmed in March 2021, with Academy Award-winning actor and filmmaker Emerald Fennell announced as the film's writer. The Promising Young Woman filmmaker previously commented on Zatanna's heavy genre and comic book influences, saying, "It’s something that we’ve been working on for a while. I’ve been speaking to Bad Robot [Productions], who are amazing. You want to get the first bit right, which is the script, before you think of anything else." She added, "I’m such a genre fan. I’m a fan of witchcraft, magic, and comic books, and this is scary and intense."

Zatanna first appeared in 1964's Hawkman #4 written by Gardner Fox and illustrated by Murphy Anderson. The daughter of magician Giovanni Zatara and the mystical Sindella, Zatanna's career as a stage magician soon gave way to putting her genuine magic to use as a hero alongside the likes of Hal Jordan and Barry Allen. Over the years Zatanna has become one of DC's most prominent mages, even going on to find an indelible place among the Justice League Dark.

Fennell has also discussed the explosive and horrifying possibilities that a Zatanna film provides, thanks to the character's dark comic book roots. "There are lots of things about her that felt like they could be really, really interesting," Fennell said. "And it'll be an opportunity to make something really quite dark. And that appealed to me, to make something big and scary. I love that stuff."

Dua Lipa's signature disco-pop sound became a global phenomenon following the release of her eponymous debut album in 2017, three years after the former model signed with Warner Bros. Records. Her second studio album, 2020's Future Nostalgia, debuted to critical and audience acclaim, earning six Grammy nominations on top of the plethora of nominations and awards the singer had already amassed. The album's success pushed her career over the top by helping her to take home both the British Female Solo Artist and British Album of the Year Brit Awards in 2021.

Zatanna does not currently have a planned release date.
