"Shaun of the Dead" may have been the first film to dub itself a Romantic Zombie Comedy, but the idea of the undead finding and fighting for love has been around for a while; after all, "My Boyfriend's Back" gave moviegoers zombie teenage love and angst in 1993. Now, Netflix's newest series takes zombie love into adulthood and the suburbs and brings Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant along for a silly -- if gory -- ride.
In the trailer for "Santa Clarita Diet," Shelia Hammond (Barrymore) is a perky realtor with a supportive husband Joel (Olyphant). They seem to have a perfect marriage, but there's just one problem: Shiela is turning into a zombie. With the support of their daughter Abby (Live Hewson) and neighborhood zombie expert Eric (Skyler Gisondo), the Hammonds put their brains together to find a way to feed Shelia's current condition. Veteran producer Victor Fresco ("Better Off Ted") will serve as executive producer on the single camera show.
Ricardo Antonio Chavira ("Desperate Housewives") and Nathan Fillion ("Serenity") play a couple of nosy neighbors, with Patton Oswalt appearing as a doctor doing his best to diagnose Sheila's problem. As her cravings continue, however, the family finds being a zombie may be just the bonding they needed. According to the official Netflix synopsis,
Married couple Sheila and Joel (Barrymore and Olyphant) are real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California. The couple's lives take a dark turn after Sheila goes through a transformation; in a good way.
Starring Drew Barrymore, Timothy Olyphant, Liv Hewson Ricardo Chavira, Skyler Gisondo and featuring Nathan Fillion and Patton Oswalt, "Santa Clarita Diet" premieres February 3rd on Netflix.
