Dredd Makes Money Before It Even Starts Shooting

Dredd, director Pete Travis’ forthcoming cinematic revival of the Judge Dredd franchise, has already made money without shooting a single scene — all thanks to pre-sales at the Toronto International Film Festival. Variety reports that sales company IM Global managed to sell the film “around the world for more than $30 million in foreign commitments” at TIFF. The 3-D film will cost a mere $45 million to shoot.

There’s little debate that Dredd features an incredibly talented lineup of names: the main players — Karl Urban as Dredd, Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson — are solid, screenwriter Alex Garland is quite accomplished and concept artist Jock’s credits speak for themselves. But with the November production start still some months away, not to mention the bitter taste of Sly Stallone that lingers from the last Judge Dredd film, it’s surprising to hear that this version of Dredd has already generated $30 million worth of international interest.

With that kind of money invested into the project, Dredd certainly has some high caliber pre-release buzz on its side already — now, it’s just a matter of seeing how the final product measures up to that buzz.
