DreamWorks Animation has long provided a slate of excellent alternatives in a world of animation dominated by Disney and Pixar. Franchises like Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek, and Madagascar have cemented the company's legacy in this arena by producing several incredible films.

Part of building that rep has been creating memorable villains who legitimately gave the heroes they faced a run for their money. And in many cases, those villains made excellent points that their opponents probably should have listened to. Then again, the problem is usually how they said it and not what they said.

10 Dave's Feelings Of Inadequacy Are Completely Understandable (Penguins of Madagascar)

Dave explains his plans to the Penguins

The Madagascar franchise has produced several great movies, not to mention a few TV spinoffs. But the breakout stars of the entire franchise were the Penguins, a paramilitary group of flightless birds led by Skipper. They got their own TV series and their own feature film.

In the Penguins of Madagascar movie, the Penguins faced off against the nefarious Dave the Octopus. His villainy was rooted in his bitterness at being a forgotten zoo exhibit. Dave's motivations were actually quite easy to identify with, as time leaves everyone behind.

9 Titan Understood The Truth About Being A Villain (Megamind)

Tighten stares into the camera

Megamind was a unique story because the focus was on the titular villain. He finally defeated his life-long rival, Metroman, and had Metro City to himself. But he got bored and decided to create a new hero to fight, named Titan.

Unfortunately, Titan got two key things wrong. First, he kept spelling his name as, "Tighten." Second, he turned into a villain. But in Tighten's idiocy, there was a simple, inherent truth about being a villain that Megamind never truly understood. It's really just about robbing banks and taking what he wanted.

8 Francis E. Francis Was Right About Puppies Being Cute (The Boss Baby)

Francis E. Francis visits his employees

Some popular films come out of the left field. While The Boss Baby was a surprise success story and a decent film, the fact that DreamWorks has capitalized on it is not. A spinoff animated TV series was produced as well as a 2021 sequel film.

The villain of the first movie was Francis E. Francis, a former star player in Baby Corp. He was bitter about being forced to grow up and decided to get revenge by using puppies to unseat babies as the cutest things on Earth. The truth is that puppies are adorable, which is something the heroes of the story knew.

7 Fairy Godmother Had A Point About Shrek (Shrek 2)

The Fairy Godmother turns everyone against Shrek

The Shrek franchise was a big part of building DreamWorks Animation into the juggernaut it is today. Several sequels and spinoffs followed the first film after its release in 2001. The first of those sequels was Shrek 2 in 2004 which featured the Fairy Godmother as the main villain.

It's important to note that the Fairy Godmother was unequivocally evil, and her end goal was incorrect. That being said, her point about Shrek not being cut out for the life he was leading wasn't exactly wrong. It took him a long time to leave the old Shrek behind, which he eventually did for his family.

6 Gallaxhar Just Wanted The Quantonium (Monsters vs. Aliens)

Gallaxhar plots to obtain the Quantonium

Monsters vs. Aliens gave film viewers exactly what the title promised, which was monsters fighting aliens. To be fair, it was mostly alien robots but they were alien nonetheless. And it was a hell of a fight, with most of the heavy lifting being done by Ginormica.

Susan Murphy was turned into Ginormica by a strange substance from space called Quantonium. Gallaxhar came to Earth to track it down and use the Quantonium for his nefarious purposes. But he was right in that humanity should not have access to it at all, based on how they were treating the monsters.

5 Stoick Was Initially Right About The Dragons (How To train your dragon)

Stoick listens to his son rant

The entire scope of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise has expanded far beyond what anyone could have ever predicted. It started off as a relatively popular children's book series and is now a veritable multimedia empire.

In the first film, Stoick was the leader of the Vikings being plagued by dragons. His son, Hiccup, saw the situation differently and was eventually able to build a cooperative relationship with the fiery beasts. But Stoick's concerns about the dragons at first were justified as they fought over a limited food supply.

4 Pharaoh Ramses Was Blinded By Power (The Prince of Egypt)

Movies Ramses talks to Moses

The Prince of Egypt is a generally forgotten and underrated early film for DreamWorks Animation. This 1998 release was a retelling of the Book of Exodus which focused on Moses and his journey to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. It's a favorite among many classic animation fans.

Not surprisingly, Pharaoh Ramses was the villain of the movie. What was less expected was how internally conflicted the character was. Ramses was right to want to take care of his county and his people. The problem was he couldn't see past the burden of leadership to the reality of the pain he was causing.

3 Lord Shen Wanted To Unify China (Kung Fu Panda 2)

Lord Shen threatens his enemies

When the basic premise of a movie is a panda becoming a Kung Fu master, fans know that there is inevitably fun to be had. This is the core of the Kung Fu Panda franchise, which pits Po against various villains as well as expectations based on his appearance.

In the second film, Po and his friends ended up facing off against Lord Shen, an evil peacock bent on ruling all of China. He was not wrong to want to unify the country and give it one leader. But his violent methodology left much to be desired.

2 Captain DuBois Had A Point About The Escaped Animals (Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted)

Captain DuBois hunts the escaped zoo animals

The third Madagascar film followed the gang of escaped zoo animals as they made their way back to New York. Part of this journey included hitching a ride with a European circus. Unfortunately, they also picked up a new person tailing them named Captain DuBois.

She was an animal control officer and wanted to bring the zoo animals in. DuBois was right about this as a lion, hippo, giraffe, and zebra on the run together is not safe for society as a whole. At the same time, her stated goal of killing them was really over the top and unnecessary.

1 Tai Lung Was Built Up To Fail By Master Shifu (Kung Fu Panda)

Tai Lung attacks Po and Shifu

In the first Kung Fu Panda film, Po was selected by Master Oogway to be the next Dragon Warrior. Master Shifu did not agree but had to train him, anyway. This didn't sit well with Tai Lung, Shifu's original protégé and the individual who believed himself to be the true Dragon Warrior.

It would be easy to write Tai Lung as arrogant and delusional. But Shifu raised Tai Lung to believe that he would be the greatest Kung Fu master of all time. And when Oogway disagreed, Shifu defeated his de facto son in combat and dumped him in jail. Tai Lung was right to be angry at his mentor.
