Despite the Sega Dreamcast's overall legacy being a mixed bag, the console had a pretty good library of games ranging from arcade ports and remakes to action and original RPGs. The oft-forgotten system unfortunately released as Sega's console reign was in decline and faded into obscurity along with some classics until more recently.

Some of the Dreamcast's best games were RPGs, and while some appeared on other systems, many originated on this console. Here are five great ones you may have missed out on.

Evolution

Video Games Sega Dreamcast Evolution Combat

Evolution was one of the very first RPGs for the Dreamcast. Originally an exclusive, the game got a sequel and spin-off for the Neo-Geo Pocket. The game tells the story of a boy who explores the world's ruins due to his father's disappearance. One day, he's tasked with looking after a strange girl who turns out to be more than she seems, and he is soon caught up in a legend.

In terms of mechanics, Evolution is nothing extra special. However, it offers a lot in terms of exploration through ancient ruins. There are secrets to uncover and turn-based battles to fight, with rows and advantages similar to those found in the SNES' Final Fantasy games. Evolution is even more visually impressive when taking into account that it was one of the first Dreamcast games overall.

Pier Solar

Pier Solar's combat on the Dreamcast

Some may recognize this title from PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and other newer consoles, but it released for the Dreamcast -- a perfect port for a retro-style RPG. Pier Solar is not just retro in its style like many indie games, however; its gameplay and dungeon difficulty also mimic classic RPGs from a bygone era. Because of this, it has a reputation for being confusing and challenging for some, but those who grew up with these types of games have enjoyed it. It's right at home on the Dreamcast, and its graphics here were a major upgrade from the Mega Drive and Genesis versions.

E.G.G.

One of the colorful areas of Elemental Gimmick Gear

Also known as Elemental Gimmick Gear, this is an interesting RPG that only ever released on the Dreamcast -- although it was intended for the Sega Saturn. It features colorful hand drawn backgrounds with 3D battles and characters. E.G.G. also has Zelda-like exploration and puzzles in which players use their Gear to get around and fight. This Gear gets more attacks and powers as the game goes on. It also has a grand story with plenty of dungeons to delve into, though it takes a while to really picks up. The introduction can be tedious, but players should stick it out, as E.G.G. is a great game.

Phantasy Star Online V.2

The original Phantasy Star Online rappies

This is first game in the online franchise that's finally made its way back to the West as Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis. Version 2 is technically an extended version of the original with additional content and features. It was intended to be the true version of the game, but time constraints caused it to be shipped before everything could be completed. Version 2 also imposed a subscription fee in Japan and the United States to play online, but did have a single-player mode for offline. Gameplay was similar to that of the original Phantasy Star Online with sectioned maps, a hub and style of fighting. This game can still be played online today thanks to private servers, so long as you can get a Dreamcast online.

Skies of Arcadia

Vyse ready to fight in Skies of Arcadia

Many remember Skies of Arcadia as a GameCube game, but it originally launched for Dreamcast in 2000. This is a unique RPG that followed three kids who, due to wild RPG circumstances involving powerful countries and old tales, end up preventing the destruction of the entire world.

Instead of typical heroes, the main characters are part of a band of pirates, and the adventuring part of the game takes place sailing across the skies. The world is similar to that of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, with separate islands but a much different story. Skies of Arcadia's combat is turn-based, with characters each having their own weapon type and specific gear like in classic Phantasy Star titles. It's a great game that has, sadly, been lost to time like so many others.
