In 2014, Marvel took a huge risk with a movie about a group of unconventional intergalactic heroes, which included a humanoid tree-like creature whose only line in the movie is 'I am Groot' and a genetically and cybernetically enhanced foul-mouthed raccoon. Unlike the Avengers or the X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy were not a mainstream group of heroes almost everyone was familiar with. Guardians of the Galaxy is a niche Marvel Comics title, so no one was expecting Marvel to give this bunch of nobodies their own movie. However, Marvel decided to take a chance on Guardians of the Galaxy, director James Gunn and a star-studded cast that includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel in lead roles.

Guardians of the Galaxy was released to wide critical acclaim and commercial success, holding an approval rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing over $773 million worldwide. In 2017, everyone's favorite band of misfits returned in a spectacular sequel and in 2018 we finally got to see Guardians teaming up with the Avengers in Avengers: Infinity War. Each and every Guardian has become a popular hero in their own right and today we'd like to honor the one and only Muscle-Bound Whack-Job with these hilarious memes.

21 THE CAKE IS A LIE

Drax Cake is a Lie

The cake is a lie -- we’ve all heard this one before. This catchphrase was popularized by the video game Portal and it is used to convey the message that the promised reward is merely being used as a motivator without any real intent of delivering. In the game, you are required to complete numerous tasks while the computer that is guiding you repeatedly mentions that once you’ve finished, there will be cake. As you progress, however, you find scribbles on the wall warning you that the cake is a lie. The catchphrase is, of course, being used to make memes about anything from politics to anime.

And since our good friend Drax does not get metaphors, he was the perfect subject for The Cake is a Lie Meme. Imagine, if you will, Peter Quill giving some instructions to Drax and casually adding that the thing he’s asking him to do is 'a piece of cake'. Drax, not understanding the metaphor, actually starts looking around to find the cake. Frustrated at Quill for promising a reward that does not exist, Drax calls out his Captain for being a liar. Ergo, the cake is a lie. And bravo Drax! This guy just doesn’t get enough credit.

20 SHE JUST TOLD EVERYONE YOUR DEEPEST, DARKEST SECRET

Drax Mom Martha

When the Guardians arrived on Ego’s planet they were introduced to Mantis, a young empathic woman who came from a race of empathic insectoid beings. Mantis was raised by the Celestial being Ego on his planet, where she lived in isolation and as such doesn’t know much about social interactions. Ego used Mantis and her empathic abilities to ease his mind and help him sleep. After clumsily introducing herself to Ego’s guests Mantis does a power demonstration for Drax, Quill and Gamora, at which point she reveals Quill’s hidden feelings for Gamora which Drax finds hilarious.

Apart from being absolutely hysterical this particular scene has proven to possess extreme meme capacity. Various creative comedians operating on the internet have taken it upon themselves to entertain us with all kinds of Drax Laughing memes. And what better way to put it to good use than to poke fun at one of the most ridiculed moments in comic book movie history. We are talking, of course, about Batman and Superman’s decision to stop killing each other because both of their moms are named Martha. Drax is laughing at both of you sons of Marthas as well as the writers. You must be so embarrassed.

19 EVIL CAN’T BE GOOD

Drax Ronan Good Villain

When fans and critics alike discuss comic book movies the villain will be one of the most talked about topics. The villain can make the difference between a good superhero movie and a great one. The Dark Knight is one of the best superhero movies ever made because of Heath Ledger’s Joker. Avengers: Infinity War earned its ending because Thanos is such a gripping villain. On the other hand, Spider-Man 3 doesn’t work because too many villains were shoehorned into it, and there was just not enough time to properly flesh them out. Over the years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had both bad and good villains. Although, if you were to ask Drax whether there are any good villains in the MCU, he’d probably tell you that there aren’t any good villains because they’re evil.

One villain in particular certainly won’t be making Drax’s list of good villains and that is Ronan the Accuser. After all, the dude is responsible for the death of Drax’s family. Although, we can’t exactly blame Drax for feeling the way he does. Ronan isn’t one of MCU’s best villains. His motivations are not developed beyond just being a madman who just wants to do bad stuff.

18 PERHAPS SOME TEAM BUILDING EXERCISES WOULD HELP

Drax No

Guardians of the Galaxy are very much unlike any other superhero team. This ragtag group of unwitting heroes is comprised of a half-human, half-celestial, former thief and self-proclaimed legendary outlaw, a former assassin and adopted daughter of Thanos -- also known as the deadliest woman in the galaxy, a former intergalactic criminal and walking thesaurus, a sarcastic and cynical genetically enhanced raccoon turned freelance criminal, a walking humanoid tree whose vocabulary consist of "I", "am" and "Groot" -- exclusively in that order and, last but not least, a socially awkward empathic bug lady. Together they do something good, something bad, and a bit of both.

Their modus operandi is sort of unconventional. Guardians don’t like to take themselves or the obstacles they're facing too seriously, opting instead to have some fun. While they do make plans, more often than not, those plans go awry and they have to improvise. But because all of them are a bit hot-headed and reckless they usually experience problems in communication. For example, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Drax somehow arrives to the conclusion that because the space monster’s skin is too thick to be pierced from the outside he must cut through it from the inside and, ignoring Gamora’s pleas to stop, he launches himself inside the beast's mouth.

17 A WISE MAN ONCE SAID

Drax Ugly

Drax and Mantis have developed a sweet sibling-like relationship. Director James Gunn has described their bond as that between and older brother and his little sister. Though, some were under the impression that Mantis was somewhat of a replacement daughter for Drax. Probably, the reason some people understood their relationship as parental is the scene from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in which Drax compares Mantis to his daughter. Mantis’ innocence reminded Drax of the childish innocence his daughter possessed. Although, Mantis at first thought she reminded Drax of his daughter because his daughter was disgusting too.

Oh right, before he compared Mantis to his daughter, Drax called her hideous and horrendous to look at. But he did offer the poor thing some solace, telling Mantis that it’s good to be ugly because then you know for sure that when someone loves you, they love you for who you are. The naive and childlike Mantis embraced her alleged ugliness with joy. She even reiterated for Gamora all the fun things her new friend Drax has taught her -- like she’s a pet and she’s ugly. Gamora was less than thrilled with Drax’s behavior, as was a good portion of the fans.

16 CAPTAIN’S ORDERS

Drax Captain America Language

Ever since the very beginning, Marvel opted for a light dose of humor in its movies, instead of succumbing to the so-called Nolan effect. As the studio started experimenting with various heroes, settings and storylines the amount of humor in the MCU movies gradually increased. The highly comedic Guardians of the Galaxy was a true game-changer, in that it set a new standard for comedy in MCU movies. On the heels of the humorous Guardians of the Galaxy came Avengers: Age of Ultron, a movie that, despite its glaring flaws, had one thing going for it -- comedy. Avengers: Age of Ultron was a hilarious movie, brimming with witty banter.

In the beginning of the movie, the Avengers are raiding a Hydra facility and in the heat of the moment Tony Stark lets out a very bad word. Boy Scout that he is, Steve Rogers quickly reminds Stark to watch his language. Naturally, Tony refuses to let Steve off the hook for being such a square, and the bad language becomes a running joke. But imagine the hilarity that would have ensued if Cap told Drax to watch his language. Well, perhaps Marvel could get these two together in the next Avengers movie.

15 THE REAL INVISIBLE MAN

Drax Perfect Invisible

The Perfection Meme refers to an exploitable image macro in which Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto, in X-Men: First Class asks to be shown "the real X". He asks twice and after seeing what he’s looking for, which is the punchline of the joke, he responds by saying "Perfection". First variations of the meme were various plays on the word "Raven". But, once we ran out of Raven puns, we turned to other "real" objects suitable to expand the joke. Nowadays, you can find numerous different variations of the Perfection Meme, including the hilarious one featured above.

As we all know, Drax developed a new power in Avengers: Infinity War -- invisibility. According to his own words, he has mastered the ability of standing so incredibly still that he becomes invisible to the eye. Drax explains this to Star-Lord and Gamora who watch in disbelief as he demonstrates his power of invisibility while eating a Zagnut. Eventually, Mantis arrives and addresses Drax directly, causing him to walk away disappointed. But don’t you worry big guy, because even if your friends don’t believe in you, there is someone who does. Erik Lehnsherr sees the real you. He knows you’re the real invisible man.

14 PERFECT TIMING

Drax Look Out

The relationship between the lovable brute Drax and adorable bug lady Mantis has stirred up some controversy. But hey, that’s become pretty much the norm these days, so this should come as no surprise. But, we digress. Drax and Mantis first met in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and kind of hit it off but in a rather unconventional way, which rubbed some fans the wrong way. The problem some people had with Drax and Mantis' relationship is that they perceived Drax’s jokes as verbal abuse and were offended by the way he treated Mantis. On the other side of the spectrum are those who wanted the relationship between Drax and Mantis to develop into romance and were disappointed when it didn’t.

However, there’s also a good number of fans who actually like these two characters and their relationship for what it is -- a friendship that has some sibling connotations. After all, that is how both director James Gunn and actor Dave Bautista described the relationship between Drax and Mantis. If you liked this odd couple, then you probably enjoyed this hilarious scene. Apparently, Drax’s perfect reflexes don’t come with perfect timing because it took Drax two seconds after Mantis had been hit to warn her about the incoming debris.

13 WORLD’S BRIGHTEST MINDS ARE STUMPED

Drax Questions Science Can't Answer

Our understanding of the universe and everything in it is undoubtedly constantly growing. Science has been able to answer so many questions we had about the human body and mind, the Earth, the stars and space, and so on and so forth. However, we are far from being omniscient. There are still countless mind-boggling questions that not even science has been able to answer. Why are we here? Is there a greater purpose behind all of this? Are we alone? What happens after we die? There are tons of questions we’re still hoping to find an answer to and recently yet another one was added to that never-ending list.

We are, of course, talking about the baffling question Drax posed in Avengers: Infinity War, "Why is Gamora?". While Peter Quill, Tony Stark and the rest of their respective teams were busy arguing over where Gamora is and who she is, Drax was contemplating what truly matters and that is, why Gamora is. This just goes to show how much more advanced Drax is in comparison to other species, including us Earthlings. But, will science ever be able to answer this question? We’ll just have to wait and see.

12 APPARENTLY, HE DOESN’T GET IDIOMS EITHER

Drax Crush

There is so much more to Drax the Destroyer than meets the eye. Underneath the brutish appearance and serious demeanor, lies a sense of honor and refined eloquence. When Drax speaks, he does so with a vocabulary no one would expect someone like him to possess. On one such occasion, Peter Quill referred to Drax as thesaurus, which Drax didn’t appreciate due to his inability to understand metaphors. This severe lack of understanding for metaphors and symbolism was noted by Rocket Raccoon to be a trait of Drax’s people. Given that the meaning of idioms cannot be deduced from the meaning of each individual word an idiom contains, it’s no wonder Drax can’t come to grips with them either.

On planet Earth, when we like someone as more than a friend, we often verbalize it in form of an idiom -- having a crush on someone. Now, since we comprehend the meaning of the idiom, we know that it has nothing to do with actually crushing anyone. However, our good friend Drax doesn’t come from Earth and our silly idioms mean jack squat to him. So, when Peter asked him whether someone had a crush on him, Drax responded the only way he knew how.

11 THE INVISIBLE MAN WAS INVISIBLE

Drax Invisible

Alright, it’s been a month since Avengers: Infinity War was released and we’re just gonna assume that you’ve seen it by now. So, you know how at the end of the movie that big purple guy who believes himself the savior of the universe and apparently wants to be everyone’s daddy snaps his fingers and makes half of the population in the universe disappear? Well, the slightly smaller big guy who hangs with the Guardians of the Galaxy and has a crush on Thor was among those who disintegrated. As things stand now, those who disappeared when Thanos snapped the fingers of his gloved hand are considered deceased. Although, the prevailing opinion among fans is that these characters will be brought back in Avengers 4.

But here’s an interesting plot twist to consider until May 2019 comes around, what if Drax didn’t actually disintegrate like the rest of the heroes, but he’s actually standing so very still that we can’t see him? We all know that Drax worked hard on developing his new ability and who knows perhaps he’s finally perfected it. Everyone laughed at poor Drax when he talked about his stand-so-still-you-become-invisible power. No one took him seriously, but maybe we should have. Maybe the invisible man was, indeed, invisible.

10 NONE THAT WE CAN SEE

Drax No Strings

Avengers: Age of Ultron is far from being the best movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are numerous things that just didn’t feel right about this movie, but we are not about to open that particular can of worms. Because, for all of its faults, Avengers: Age of Ultron did do some things right and one of those things is casting James Spader as Ultron. James Spader’s performance improves this movie by leaps and bounds. Every scene he’s in is immediately better because he’s in it. His chilling voice gave us pause and left us with a feeling of unease, and the first time he made us feel that way was when we saw the trailer.

Once he became a real boy, Ultron gave a speech and quoted Pinocchio by saying that there are no strings on him. The implication obviously being that he’s no longer under Stark’s control and that from this point on he is acting of his own free will. An easily understood metaphor for sure, unless your name is Drax the Destroyer. Metaphors are just not his jam, and he prefers to give words their literal interpretation. So, now he must be wondering why this robotic creature is stating the obvious since there are clearly no strings on him.

9 ALWAYS ASKING THE TOUGH QUESTIONS

Drax Why is the Infinity Stone

Avengers: Infinity War is a mammoth cinematic achievement in every sense. The movie featured nearly 30 heroes, introduced throughout the course of the past ten years, as well as a number of supporting characters and, of course, the villains. According to the screenwriter Christopher Markus, a total of 40 Marvel characters have speaking roles in the movie, which is a lot. Nevertheless, Markus and McFeely managed to write an outstanding script that allowed each and every one of these characters to come into the spotlight at least for a moment.

Avengers: Infinity War is an action-packed, high-octane, heart-rending spectacle that amidst all the chaos and tragedy managed to be hilarious as well. Continuing in the typical MCU fashion, Infinity War has a lot to offer in terms of comedy. Dave Bautista’s funniest line in the movie gained so much popularity that it continues to spawn numerous memes. Avengers: Infinity War is all about Thanos and his quest for the Infinity Stones. However, all everyone wants to know is where these Stones are located, yet no one ever asked the tough question -- why they are. Well, not until now. As always, Drax the Destroyer is here to ask the questions no one else is willing to.

8 NOTHING GOES OVER HIS HEAD

Drax Metaphor

After causing mayhem and destruction on Xandar, the legendary outlaw Star-Lord, the deadly assassin Gamora, the genetically and cybernetically modified raccoon Rocket and his tree-like humanoid friend Groot are transported to the high security prison the Kyln. There, they come into contact with a dangerous inmate named Drax who tries to kill Gamora in order to avenge his family, that was killed by Ronan and Thanos. Quill manages to convince Drax that Gamora help him get closer to Ronan, whom she has betrayed, and the five-men band decides to escape the Kyln in Quill’s ship in order to sell the Orb Quill stole to Gamora’s buyer.

Rocket Raccoon comes up with an escape plan, which is set into motion prematurely when Groot steals the Quarnyx Battery and sets off every possible alarm in the facility. Still, the team beats the odds and manages to get into the launch tower. In a scene inside the launch tower, explaining to the team that using metaphors on Drax won’t work because his people are too literal, Rocket says that metaphors will fly over Drax’s head. Proving Rocket’s statement right, Drax responds by saying that nothing goes over his head, because his reflexes are too fast so he would catch it.

7 MASTER OF COMEDY

Drax Joke

Ever since the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel movies have included a healthy dose of humor. However, that comedic element was cranked up to eleven with the release of the space opera superhero flick about a group of misfits who band together to become the unwitting Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn’s hilarious, upbeat and thoughtful action flick set the bar pretty high and for a moment we were skeptical about whether future MCU movies will be able to live up to that standard. Three years after the release of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Taika Waititi raised the bar once again with his jaw-dropping Thor: Ragnarok.

Even so, Drax the Destroyer of Guardians of the Galaxy remains the number one expert on all things comedy. Let’s face it, no one understands humor the way this guy does. Drax knows a good joke when he sees one and won’t give you any pity laughs. After all, his reflexes are so good that it’s impossible for him not to catch a good joke. Besides, how could anyone doubt Drax as the master of comedy after having seen him in Guardians of the galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War?

6 MUSCLE-BOUND MAN WITH A PLAN

Drax Has a Plan

Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely did a fantastic job with Avengers: Infinity War, despite the perceived difficulty of having around thirty heroes in play, all of whom needed to contribute to the story in a meaningful way. In order to succeed at this, the writers split our heroes into teams which combined, separated and converged throughout the movie. You had Thor, Rocket Raccoon and Groot visiting Nidavellir to forge a Thanos-killing weapon. Then, you had Steve Rogers’ team meeting up with T’Challa in Wakanda, where the final battle takes place. And finally, you had Tony Stark, Doctor Strange and Peter Parker forming a reluctant alliance with Star-Lord, Drax and Mantis on Titan.

The team on Titan actually came dangerously close to taking away the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos. The group devised a plan, blindsided the Mad Titan and had Mantis subdue him while the rest of the team tried to take off the gauntlet. A solid plan for sure, even if it did end up falling apart. Although, if you were to ask Drax, he’d probably tell you that he had a much better plan. While Peter Quill and Tony Stark were arguing over who should do the planning, Drax had already made up his own plan that couldn’t possibly go wrong.

5 ALWAYS SO LITERAL

Drax Sense of Humor

Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 are among the funniest movies Marvel has made. The first Guardians of the Galaxy film pretty much set the standard for comedy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And until Taika Waititi made Thor: Ragnarok, the 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy movie was the funniest movie in the MCU. This lovable group of losers, who despite having been through traumatizing events in the past, decides to give a damn for a change and save the galaxy no less and in the process they provided us with tons of laughs.

All five main characters of Guardians of the Galaxy bring something unique to the table. The optimistic, naturally upbeat and sarcastic Peter Quill kept us entertained with his quippy remarks and '80s pop culture references. The trigger-happy Rocket Raccoon made us laugh with his unabashed cynicism and sarcasm. Gamora’s reactions to being surrounded by the biggest idiots in the galaxy were priceless. The adorable Groot was a hoot and a half. And the brutish Drax is full of contradictions that make him a walking comedy. Sadly, though he probably wouldn’t understand this as a compliment, since humor is not one of his five senses.

4 COMING TO NETFLIX THIS SUMMER

Drax 13 Reasons Why Is a Gamora

13 Reasons Why is one of Netflix’s most popular series. If you’re not familiar with 13 Reasons Why, it’s a haunting story about a teenage girl named Hannah who takes her own life and leaves behind 13 tapes, each one directed at an individual partially responsible for what happened. The tapes are passed from one person to another, as they struggle to live with the guilt over being the cause of Hannah’s death and keep the dangerous secrets that are revealed on the tapes hidden. Both seasons of the show are currently available on Netflix.

As for the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the show, titled 13 Reasons Why is Gamora, it will be available for streaming this summer. The series will explore the very essence of Gamora and will be told from the perspective of her Guardians of the Galaxy teammate, Drax the Destroyer. In Avengers: Infinity War, Drax asked the most profound question relating to the very being of one of the fallen heroes, which still has not been answered. Marvel recognized that there is a need to address this issue and it decided that the best way to do that is with this 13-episode Netflix series inspired by the hit series 13 Reasons Why.

3 YOU CAN’T FOOL DEADPOOL

Drax Deadpool Art

When the promotion for the first Deadpool movie started everyone was in shock and awe at how innovative, odd, and absurd it was. Little did we know that the promotional campaign for the sequel would double down on the obscure techniques employed the first time around. Certainly, the oddest bit of promotion for Deadpool 2 was the Wet on Wet teaser trailer, starring Deadpool as Bob Ross in a parody of The Joy of Painting. The hilarious video became insanely popular and, of course, inspired the creation of memes.

Here’s a meme of Deadpool drawing Drax. Drax, who is invisible because his movement is so slow that it’s become imperceptible to the naked eye. Drax developed this particular ability in Avengers: Infinity War and demonstrated it by observing Star-Lord and Gamora for a quite some time with both of them none the wiser. However, while his Guardians of the Galaxy teammates were not able to see him, Deadpool sure can. Drax tried his best to slow down his movements as much as he possibly could, but he wasn’t able to cheat the keen eyes of Wade Wilson. But, seriously though, an encounter between Deadpool and Drax would be the best thing ever.

2 THEY WERE ALL DEARLY MISSED

Drax Heroes We Didn't See

Avengers: Infinity War was jam-packed with heroes. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow and Hulk were all in it, so out of the original Avengers team only poor Hawkeye didn’t make an appearance. However, newer members such as Vision, Scarlet Witch, War Machine and Falcon did join the party, as well as other earthlings including Doctor Strange, Wong, Spider-Man, Winter Soldier, Black Panther, Okoye, Shuri, M’Baku, Nick Fury and Maria Hill. The complete team of Guardians of the Galaxy and Nebula were accounted for, as were the Asgardian guard of the Bifrost Bridge Himedall and Eitri, the skilled blacksmith and king of Nidavellir.

Impressive for sure, but some fans were a bit disappointed that heroes like Ant-Man and Valkyrie didn’t make it into the movie. Not to mention that everyone is still going on and on about where the hell was Hawkeye. Hopefully, Avengers 4 will include those heroes we didn’t get the chance to see in Avengers: Infinity War, including Drax the Destroyer. It’s cool that he’s discovered a new ability, but we really miss his mug. So, please Marvel, can you make Drax visible again in Avengers 4? It would mean a lot to his devoted fans.
