Drawing Crazy Patterns – Jason Todd’s Memorial in the Batcave Getting Smashed

In this feature, I spotlight five scenes/moments from within comic book stories that fit under a specific theme (basically, stuff that happens frequently in comics). Here is an archive of all the patterns we’ve spotlighted so far.

This time around, based on a suggestion from reader Nick P., we take a look at times when the Jason Todd memorial in the Batcave is smashed.

Like so many aspects of the Batman mythos, the Jason Todd Memorial was created by Frank Miller. And he came up with even before Jason Todd had actually DIED! The Robin memorial is in the future in Batman: The Dark Knight #2…

The memorial makes its modern-day debut in Batman #441 (in a kind of hard-to-see way)…

It even made the cover of Batman #456!

It was notably broken during Batman and Bane’s fight in Batman #497 (by Doug Moench, Jim Aparo and Dick Giordano)…

At the beginning of the major earthquake that opened up the crossover Batman: Cataclysm in Batman: Shadow of the Bat #73 (by Alan Grant, Mark Buckingham and Wayne Faucher), the quake takes care of the case…

Ed Brubaker, Scott McDaniel and Andy Owens have Nightwing and Batman have a knockdown dragout fight in Batman #600 (over Batman’s willingness to give up his Bruce Wayne identity after Wayne was arrested for murder plus, of course, Batman not willing to answer the simple question, “You didn’t actually kill that lady, right?”) and it leads to the memorial being destroyed…

In Batman #657, Grant Morrison, Andy Kubert and Jesse Delperdang have Damian take over the role of Robin by smashing Tim Drake into the memorial (which remained as a tribute to Jason Todd’s time as Robin even after Jason Todd returned to life)…

Tim returns the favor in Batman and Robin #10 by Peter Tomasi, Patrick Gleason and Mick Gray…

Feel free to point out other examples of this happening!

Thanks to Nick for the suggestion. If YOU have a suggestion, just drop me a line at bcronin@comicbookresources.com.
