Dragon Quest Scan Battlers is coming to an end. Service for the arcade game ended in Japan in 2020 and the Southeast Asian release is headed the same way on September 30, 2022. Like many Dragon Quest games, Scan Battlers never made its way to the United States, but English-speaking Dragon Quest fans aren't totally out of luck -- the game was translated to English in Taiwan and Malaysia.
Screen Rant's Austin King recently shared a handful of images of the English-language Scan Battlers cards, courtesy of Twitter user @Uglyidioto. The cards come from the Malaysian release of the game, and the images were captured just a few weeks before the end of support for the game. Uglyidioto captured images of the Scan Battlers cabinet itself, along with a handful of English-language Dragon Quest Scan Battlers cards.
Dragon Quest Scan Battlers uses a card system that allows players to scan cards into the game to unlock different weapons, armor, attacks, and characters. It works a bit like the arcade version of the fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us, which allows players to scan in various DC characters to control. Scan Battlers' cards are all derived from the broader Dragon Quest series. Most of the cards will be familiar to long-time fans of the series, although some of them, like the adorable Purrcenary, borrow from games that were never translated to English to begin with, like the MMO Dragon Quest X. That means the English-translated Malaysian version of Scan Battlers includes some of the only English-language versions of certain elements of the series.
Unless they can book a flight to Malaysia before service ends on September 30, American Dragon Quest fans might never have the chance to play Dragon Quest Scan Battlers in English. they can still get a sense for the game thanks to these newly-released images.
Thankfully, Scan Battlers is far from the only Dragon Quest project around. American Dragon Quest enthusiasts will still have the chance to play the upcoming Dragon Quest XII: Flames of Fate when it eventually arrives. They'll also be able to play Dragon Quest Treasure when it lands in December. The anime Dragon Quest: Adventure of Dai is also available, although it's coming to an end soon.
Dragon Quest Scan Battlers is still available in Taiwan and Malaysia. Service for the game will end on September 30 at the end of its sixth season.
