WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super Chapter 61, by Akira Toriyama, Toyotarou, Caleb Cook and Brandon Bovia, available now in English from Viz Media.

When Vegeta first appeared in Dragon Ball Z, the Saiyan Prince proved absolutely dominant in battle, with the Z-Fighters only beating him and Nappa due to sheer numbers and some good luck. However, since then, Goku has outpaced Vegeta at every turn by first becoming a Super Saiyan and then defeating some of the franchise's deadliest enemies. Although their rivalry has softened somewhat in recent years, Vegeta has still trained hard to surpass his rival, and in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 61, the Saiyan Prince finally outpaces Goku.

Vegeta's current path started on New Namek, where he and his allies were defeated by Moro due to the villain's powerful energy absorption ability. While Goku went with the Angel Merus to learn Ultra Instinct, Vegeta instead went to Planet Yardrat, where his rival learned Instant Transmission after his battle with Frieza on Namek. However, Vegeta had no intentions of learning Instant Transmission. Instead, he learned a move called Forced Spirit Fission.

After using Instant Transmission to return to Earth, Vegeta faces off against Moro. At first, the villain clearly has Vegeta outclassed, despite the Saiyan Prince's significant power increase. However, as the battle progresses, Moro grows weaker, allowing Vegeta to gain the upperhand. It's then revealed Forced Spirit Fission is actually separating Moro from the energy he absorbed while ravaging the universe, making the villain significantly weaker in the process. This new move then returns the energy Moro has stolen back to its various sources. While not all of the places Moro attacked will once again be filled with life, the residents of New Namek that died as a result of the villain's energy absorption abilities do come back to life thanks to their Dragon Balls protecting them from decay.

When Goku realizes Vegeta is using Forced Spirit Fission, he remarks that he's never actually seen the move performed. "Good going, Vegeta," Goku adds. "That wasn't a move I managed to learn." Vegeta then brags that he's more "talented" than Goku, and the latter admits he'll need to work to surpass the former again.

After this exchange, though, Vegeta is unable to defeat Moro. The Saiyan Prince, who intends to kill Moro, isn't able to finish the job before the villain uses his magic to take off back to his ship. There, he murders Shimo-Rekka and absorbs Seven-Three. It's revealed Moro actually has a copy of his powers in Seven-Three, and the villain returns more powerful than ever. Moro catches Vegeta by surprise and is able to quickly take down the Saiyan Prince, robbing him of his victory.

Even if Vegeta wasn't able to defeat Moro for good, his use of Forced Spirit Fission helped him do better against the villain than Goku did with Ultra Instinct Sign. In this way, Vegeta has finally surpassed his old rival, at least temporarily. Still, regardless of whether he fully beat Moro, Vegeta proved just why his dedication to hard work can make all the difference when it comes to protecting the universe.
