It’s usually very exciting when anime series are able to extend themselves into franchises that last for multiple decades, just as Akira Toriyama’s prolific Dragon Ball anime has extended its story through its latest chapter, Dragon Ball Super. The growing Dragon Ball saga remains focused on Goku and his friends as they protect the planet, but there have been considerable changes since the shonen series’ debut.

Characters in Dragon Ball are always improving and growing stronger, but one of the greatest metrics of growth is when individuals unveil incredible new transformations. The latest transformation that Dragon Ball Super has revealed is Ultra Ego, and fans have a lot of questions about it.

8 It’s Vegeta’s New Transformation

Dragon Ball fans have been eagerly anticipating Vegeta’s newest transformation as soon as Goku first obtained Ultra Instinct status during the Tournament of Power. The anime showcases Vegeta’s Advanced Super Saiyan Blue state, but it seemed as if Vegeta’s new direction would allow the character to develop his own skill for once as opposed to directly following in Goku’s footsteps. It’s taken some time for this prediction to come to pass, but Dragon Ball Super’s manga has just marked the debut of Ultra Ego, a new plateau of power that Vegeta achieves. It definitely seems as if this ability will be the new skill that Vegeta leans into the most.

7 It’s The Inverse Of Ultra Instinct

One aspect of Dragon Ball that continues to get strengthened and explored in compelling ways is the friendly rivalry that exists between Goku and Vegeta. The two Saiyans motivate each other to work harder and surpass their previous limits. This relationship often features Vegeta and Goku playing catch up to each other as they cycle through the same milestones. Dragon Ball Super embraces the differences in Goku and Vegeta and has steadily pushed them down different paths. The culmination of this is that Ultra Ego and Ultra Instinct are two complimentary fighting styles, but they represent the opposite ideals, which is often the case with Vegeta and Goku.

6 It’s The Gods Of Destructions’ Signature Attack Style

Dragon Ball Super’s manga has included some extensive training sessions as Goku and Vegeta both prepare for the next big threat that approaches. Goku studies under Whis while Vegeta trains with God of Destruction, Beerus. There’s some fiery tension between Vegeta and Beerus, but it helps service his progress.

Beerus is the one who educates Vegeta on Ultra Ego and he explains that it’s a transformation that’s associated with himself and the other Gods of Destruction. Vegeta has progressively embodied more God of Destruction characteristics, so his proficiency with Ultra Ego only continues this trend.

5 It Contains A Physical Transformation

The most important aspect of any transformation is the level of strength that it contains and if it actually improves an individual’s abilities in battle. Ultra Instinct gives Goku a major boost, but beyond a trippy aura and another change in hair and eye color, he doesn’t exhibit much of a transformation.

It turns out that the Ultra Ego process is somewhat more demanding. Vegeta receives a more intense aura and hair color, but his body also physically experiences changes, too. Vegeta loses his eyebrows in Ultra Ego form and he looks a lot like a Super Saiyan 3, minus the longer hair. The process even appears to be slightly painful, which only makes it a more intimidating transformation.

4 It’s A Process That Can Be Taught

Transformations are handled in different ways in Dragon Ball. A lot of the time a new level of Super Saiyan is achieved entirely by accident, and extreme trauma and emotion pushes a Saiyan through to the next level. Goku’s initial Ultra Instinct transformation occurs under similar circumstances, and it’s a strange, new process that catches him by surprise. It appears that Ultra Ego is a more intentional form that can be triggered. Beerus specifically trains Vegeta to head down the Ultra Ego route and he’s able to help him enter this form.

3 It Might Have Multiple Tiers

Goku first stumbles upon Ultra Instinct during his fight against Jiren in the Tournament of Power, but it’s an unstable version of the transformation. Goku slowly ascends the Ultra Instinct ladder and becomes comfortable with its more advanced forms until he’s finally able to reach its apex.

Since Ultra Ego is meant to be the inverse of Ultra Instinct, then it stands to reason that it might also have different tiers until the user fully masters it. Vegeta’s current Ultra Ego state is staggering, but it could possibly develop into some kind of giant Vegeta avatar, like what Goku has experienced with Ultra Instinct.

2 Its Main Principle Involves Embracing Damage, Not Avoiding It

Goku’s experiments with Ultra Instinct have been so compelling because it appears to be a form that’s fueled by intuition and a tendency to avoid battle more than anything else. Goku gains such a Zen level of calm that allows him to anticipate nearly every attack that’s thrown at him. Alternatively, Ultra Ego is all about accepting damage and embracing the brunt of combat. Unlike Ultra Instinct, it’s not driven by intuition and Vegeta almost greedily allows himself to take hits while in Ultra Ego form.

1 It Might Trigger Its Own Specific Techniques, Like The Sphere Of Destruction

Manga Dragon Ball Super Vegeta Sphere Of Destruction

Often in Dragon Ball, a transformation alone can be enough to overpower the opponent, but there are other occasions where a new form is merely a way to augment old schools and push them to new heights. Goku’s Ultra Instinct doesn’t appear to come with any of its own special moves (beyond its avatar state). However, Vegeta debuts the Sphere of Destruction during his fight against Granolah. It’s unclear if this attack is an extension of Ultra Ego or if Vegeta learned it independently during his training under Beerus, like he did with Hakai, but it still seems linked to Ultra Ego.
