WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Episode 123 of Dragon Ball Super, "Body and Soul, Full Power Release! Goku and Vegeta!!" which debuted Saturday on Adult Swim.
Things start to get desperate as the Tournament of Power that has made up the final storyline in Dragon Ball Super approaches its final bouts. Gohan and Android 17 continue to battle the immensely strong Top, only to discover that, even working together, they may be outmatched. Meanwhile, Frieza begins to take his fight against the blindingly fast Dyspo more seriously. And with Vegeta incapacitated after his recent confrontation with Jiren, Goku finds himself standing alone against the most powerful fighter from Universe 11.
Knowing from their previous encounters that Jiren is significantly stronger than he is, even while transformed as a Super Saiyan Blue, Goku employs more mindful strategy than simply fighting against his opponent toe-to-toe. Using an array of energy blasts, Goku creates an impromptu minefield around Jiren but the Pride Trooper is completely unfazed by the proximity attack. Growing desperate, Goku lures Jiren to an outcropping at the edge of the arena and severs it using Krillin's signature attack, the Destructo Disk. The strategy nearly pays off but Jiren is able to jump up through the falling debris before leaving the tournament's bounds, now enraged that he was nearly eliminated by such an inferior opponent.
Jiren unveils a fraction of his true power, which results in Goku being pummeled so hard that he quickly reverts back to his base state. Previously, Jiren had fought to a relative standstill against Goku in his newfound Ultra Instinct form and easily deflected a fully powered Spirit Bomb, so the revelation that he had been holding back the whole time is particularly troubling for the Z Fighters as they continue to fight for the survival of their entire universe in the multiversal contest of champions. Fortunately for Goku, Vegeta has recovered sufficiently to join his longtime frenemy in the fray, and the two Saiyan warriors unleash previously unseen levels of power.
Goku quickly transforms back in a Super Saiyan Blue and amplifies the transformation by pushing his body beyond its physical limits through the Kaio Ken technique. Goku had been using this strategy ever since the series' earlier Tournament of Destruction to great effect but takes to even further levels here as he rejoins the battle. Similarly, Vegeta transforms into a Super Saiyan Blue and channels the form's vast energy boost into himself, effectively becoming stronger than he has ever been before. The change is marked by a slightly increased muscle mass for the Saiyan Prince as well as a brighter, more effusive aura emanating from him as he prepares for his rematch against Jiren.
The resulting battle is fast and furious and to keep Jiren off-balance, Goku and Vegeta rely on unpredictable, visibly uncoordinated attacks. Unsure of which of his opponents will strike next and how, the momentum begins to shift towards Goku and Vegeta's favor as the Tournament of Power continues, with the fates of Universes 7 and 11 at stake.
Jiren has quickly established himself as the strongest fighter in the entire Dragon Ball franchise by easily defeating his opponents and withstanding their most powerful attacks head-on without visibly straining himself. While the battle may be tipped in Goku and Vegeta's favor for now, once Jiren regains his bearings, the tide may turn back for him and Universe 11. And with Jiren revealing he has been holding back his true potential the entire time, Goku and Vegeta's new levels of power may not be enough to finish the fight.
