WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super Chapter 87, by Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou, available now in English from Viz Media.

Dragon Ball Super Chapter 87 brings back Frieza (Freeza in Viz Media's translation) and reveals his powerful new transformation: Black Frieza.

In the latest chapter of the manga series, Goku and Vegeta struggle against Gas, who is not quite as defeated as he seemed at the end of Chapter 86. Just when it looks like the Saiyans are about to lose, Frieza arrives on Planet Cereal and kills Gas with a single hit before murdering Elec for trying to use the Heeters to usurp him.

After beating Gas and Elec, Frieza turns his incredible new abilities on Goku and Vegeta, who tap into True Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego, respectively. Despite how formidable those two transformations are, Frieza beats his old foes with ease, though he opts not to kill them. During that short bout, Frieza reveals the name of this new transformation as Black Frieza.

As to how he got his powers, the villain explains that he was in the Room of Spirit and Time when Gas and Granolah made their wishes to become the most powerful fighters in the universe. Frieza was not, strictly speaking, in Universe 7 at the time those wishes were made, so his powers weren't factored in. While in that location, Frieza trained for ten years, powering up to be able to surpass the Saiyans.

Who Is Frieza?

Introduced early in Dragon Ball Z, Frieza is one of the deadliest villains in the franchise's history. The galactic tyrant was responsible for the subjugation and destruction of numerous planets, including Planet Vegeta. Goku first accessed the base level of Super Saiyan while fighting Frieza on Namek, a battle that nearly resulted in both of them dying. Later, Future Trunks killed Frieza. Still, despite that death, Dragon Ball Super actually resurrected the villain and gave him a new transformation, dubbed Golden Frieza. Black Frieza, the manga makes clear, is significantly more powerful than that form. It's not clear at this time just how Black Frieza will factor into future storylines or if it will appear in the anime.

New chapters of Dragon Ball Super generally release monthly in English through Viz Media. However, no official release date has been revealed for the next chapter as of writing. The most recent entry in the anime series is Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. That film is available in theaters in North America now after having proven successful in Japan.
