The following contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super Chapter 83, by Akira Toriyama, Toyotarou, Caleb Cook and Brandon Bovia, available now in English through Viz Media.

Shenron himself may not be able to undo the damage that Chapter 83 of the Dragon Ball Super manga just did to the beloved franchise. As the conflict with the Heeters continued, a flashback revealed that Goku's father, Bardock himself, had a run-in of his own with Gas -- the Heeters' proud attack dog -- ages ago. While Bardock received the beating of a lifetime, Monaito -- a Namekian who has his own pair of Dragon Balls -- offered to use his dragon's power to whisk the struggling Saiyan to safety. Although Bardock refused his chance to escape, the wish he did pass along to Monaito would be an irreparable, unforgivable mistake that negates the entire series, from Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z to Super.

Wish-spamming has reached an all-time high in the "Granolah" arc of the Dragon Ball Super manga. Monaito, the surrogate father to Granolah, has his own pair of Dragon Balls that summon a wish-granting dragon, don't scatter after use and have no cooldown time, meaning they can be used unceasingly. Granolah and Gas have each already used them to wish themselves into being the strongest warrior in the universe. During the flashback to Bardock's fight with Gas, Monaito offered to wish Bardock back to Planet Vegeta, but the Saiyan refused. When Monaito asked what wish he could make for Bardock, the father of Goku replied, "I'd wish that my sons end up thriving."

Bardock wishes that his sons would thrive in Chapter 83 of the Dragon Ball Super manga

Upon hearing the wish, Monaito commented that it's much better to make a wish that helps someone else, but the manga does not confirm if Monaito actually made Bardock's wish. However, if he did, Dragon Ball as a whole is basically ruined. Goku is a problematic protagonist already because he generally doesn't grow as a person and acts selfishly as often as he acts for the good of others. The only thing that changes about Goku is his power level, and Bardock's wish would mean that Goku's literal decades of blood, sweat and screaming weren't the cause for his prodigious power, but rather came about as a wish on the Dragon Balls.

In fairness, nearly all stories are forced to arrange themselves (sometimes conveniently) in such a way as to benefit the main character and their journey. While Goku thrives off plot armor more than many, the idea that the in-universe reason for his power is a magical wish is the worst possible thing that DBS could have done. After all, Bardock's battle with Gas took place before the destruction of Planet Vegeta, while Goku was still a baby named Kakarot and living with his mother Gine. This would mean the entirety of Goku's journey, from the original Dragon Ball to the present, has been fundamentally altered in an extremely negative way.

Gohan headbutts Raditz in Dragon Ball Z

The only saving grace of this development is that the manga does not explicitly show Monaito granting Bardock's wish, allowing for the hope that Monaito assumed Bardock was just being facetious or even just thinking out loud, and that he opted to not wish for anything. This might even be the more likely scenario, given that Bardock said he'd wish for his sons (plural) to thrive, and Raditz's comedically short tenure in DBZ was the exact opposite of thriving. If a magical wish-granting dragon used its power for Raditz to thrive, he probably wouldn't have been wounded by a toddler and quickly killed to literally never be heard from again.

However, if everything that Goku has ever done has been the result of a wish on the Dragon Balls, this series is officially dead in the water. Fans are willing to suspend disbelief of convenient plot developments "because he's the main character," but Goku having in-universe plot armor is a step too far. Hopefully, fans can assume that Monaito didn't carry out Bardock's wish, and as long as Raditz stays dead and unmentioned, audiences can pretend this never happened. If Raditz ever emerges from Hell as a Super Saiyan 5 or something else as crazy though, Dragon Ball Super will have officially jumped the shark.
