American fans of the Dragon Ball franchise were pleased to learn that their 2019 would be starting off in spectacular fashion with Funimation's release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly back on January 16th. An astounding opening weekend of over $21 million in domestic box office ticket sales surprised nearly everyone outside of DBZ fans, but even more impressive is the worldwide total, with the film opening in 18 international markets back in December of 2018, of almost $102 million and climbing. Not too shabby for a theatrical anime release.

While the numbers have been talked about by those outside the film's target audience, fans of the Dragon Ball franchise have been discussing the events of Broly and the ramifications it has on not only the character, but also the series that we know and love. With Broly being such a popular, yet rarely seen character, this film has changed some of the things we once knew about the Saiyan to bring him more in line with what's happening with the series today, and we're going to provide you with the 10 biggest differences in this version of Broly the character.

Warning: Spoilers for Dragon Ball Super: Broly ahead...

10 10. His Origin

Ever since 1993's Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly has been known to be one of the most powerful Saiyans in the galaxy. This time around, we're shown that his strength was recognized early as King Vegeta notices how much higher his latent ability far exceeded his own son's Prince Vegeta. Knowing this, King Vegeta banishes Broly to an outlying planet devoid of intelligent life under the guise of his latent ability being a threat to Planet Vegeta and the Saiyans. Broly's father Paragus steals a pod and follows his son to raise him with revenge on his brain.

9 9. His New Placement In The Dragon Ball Timeline

Anyone who has seen the film will recognize an immediate difference from Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan. While the original Broly film wasn't officially canon, Dragon Ball Super: Broly takes place directly after "The Tournament of Power" arc from Dragon Ball Super. Recognizing this early lets us know we're in for a whole new treat.

8 8. Broly vs. Goku

During Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, we learned that Broly hated Goku because of Goku's constant crying when they were children. His screams and cries would ultimately drive baby Broly insane and he never forgot his dislike for his fellow Saiyan. In this film, Broly doesn't have a deep hatred for Goku, but he was raised on revenge due to the circumstances of his banishment, so his rage leads him to try and destroy our hero.

7 7. Broly vs. Vegeta

Because of King Vegeta's decision to banish Broly, Vegeta is bound to deal with the ramifications now that Broly is grown and is reaching his power potential. Unlike Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan where Vegeta shows cowardice knowing the legend of Broly, this version of Vegeta doesn't hesitate to battle his powerful foe and even puts up a good fight for quite a while. While it ultimately isn't enough, it is a welcomed change from the original.

6 6. His Relationship With His Father

One major similarity between this and the original film is the way Paragus raises Broly. One major difference is the love and admiration Broly has for his father this time around. While Paragus does ultimately bite the bullet like the first film, it doesn't happen at the hands of his son this time around.

Instead, Frieza kills him in an attempt to tap into the full abilities of Broly.

5 5. His Source Of Rage

The original film didn't explain much about the history of Broly's powers or why he has them other than the fact that he was The Legendary Super Saiyan. Dragon Ball Super: Broly dives deep and explains that while Paragus had to remove Broly's tail due to his uncontrollable rage and power in his Great Ape form, the powerful warrior is still able to tap into those abilities as he grows angrier. Add this to the fact that his father raised him in hatred for those who banished them and these reasons allow him to reach power levels higher than other Saiyans, including our favorite heroes.

4 4. His Empathy

Gohan has a line during Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan that epitomizes exactly what the villain is, "He's... He's pure evil." This time around, however, Broly isn't pure evil. Not only does he have friends in Cheelai, Lemo, and the creature from Vampa, Ba, but he also doesn't like fighting much, regardless of how good he is at it. Instead of being an evil villain, he's simply a villain because of his situation, his struggle to survive a destitute planet, and the way he was raised by his father. Throughout the film, we get to see the softer side of Broly shine through on multiple occasions.

3 3. Broly vs. Gogeta

With Broly proving to be a force unstoppable by both Vegeta and Goku by themselves due to his ability to adapt and seemingly unlimited power resources, our heroes are forced to merge together as one using the Metamoran Fusion Dance.

This not only gives out heroes enough strength to match the powerful Broly, but it also gives us a new beginning for the merged character of Gogeta that fans have seen in the past.

2 2. His Fate

During the original film, Broly is eventually defeated and destroyed by Goku, but this time around he is spared as his friends Cheelai and Lemo round up the Dragon Balls and save his life by wishing he gets sent back to Planet Vampa when it became clear he could not prevail over Gogeta. Because of his inherent goodness, despite his penchant for violence, Broly is able to leave Earth, calm down, and have a real future.

1 1. His Future In The Series

Goku, always one to challenge himself and want to grow stronger, shows up on Planet Vampa to give Broly Senzu Beans to help him heal. He says what we've seen the entire film and tells Broly that he knows that he's a good man, and asks that he be allowed to return to train with the powerful Saiyan. This film looks to bring Broly into canon and allow Funimation to use him along with the rest of the Z Fighters. It looks like this new version of Broly has quite the future ahead of him, especially considering the success this film saw at the box office!
