In addition to revealing a new animation style, the producers of the upcoming Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie also revealed new looks for several of Goku's friends, which also provides a hint as to when the new movie takes place.

Dragon Ball series producer Akio Iyoku and animation producer Norihiro Hayashida revealed the new character designs during the special Dragon Ball panel at Comic-Con@Home. One of the new designs shown was for Goku's granddaughter, the quarter-Saiyan Pan, who is now old enough to attend kindergarten. This would mean that Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is set three or four years after the events of the previous Dragon Ball Super movie, BROLY, which occurred when Pan was about a year old. An older Pan accompanies a de-aged Goku in the events of Dragon Ball GT, which takes place after the events of Z and Super. Iyoku says that Pan will an integral part in Super Hero's story.

Goku's nemesis turned friend Piccolo received some minor updates to his character design: the Namekian warrior's upper arms are now colored yellow instead of the pink color that was used throughout the anime. The color of Piccolo's obi (waist wrap,) has now been changed from blue to red, which was the color it was first depicted as in Akira Toriyama's original works. The panel also showcased the exterior of Piccolo's house, revealing that the taciturn warrior lives in a Namekian-style residence built next to a secluded waterfall and lake. The Super Hero movie will give fans a look inside the home.

Krillin, Goku's best friend, will get a much more dramatic makeover in Super Hero. Krillin now wears a new version of the purple and yellow police uniform he donned in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'. The whites of Krillin's eyes will now be colored in to separate them from his skin color. "We were asked why he didn't have white eyes," Hayashida said, "so we changed it to match the original design."

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero will be released sometime in 2022.
