He's going to be a very vital cast member to Dragon Ball Super going forward if the anime chooses to follow the same plot beats that the manga is going forward with. Spoilers ahead for anime-only fans!

10 HIS NAME IS A PUN

One of the things that many characters in the Dragon Ball series shares is a punny name. For those not in the know, many characters of the series have a pun in their name that may not be obvious to international viewers not in Japan because many of these puns are based on the Japanese language.

This trend didn't stop with Merus, as his name is a Japanese pun as well. His name is a play on the word "surume," which is a Japanese dried squid snack. Funnily enough, it's also an Italian pun due to Merus translating in that language to "pure wine."

9 HE CAN GO ULTRA INSTINCT

One of the most important things about Merus is that he is able to go into the mysterious Ultra Instinct at will, showing that this form is not Goku nor Saiyan exclusive. After finding out that Merus is able to go Ultra Instinct it is revealed to Goku that Merus stayed quiet on the topic of this transformation for reasons not yet revealed.

Goku originally noticed that Merus has the Ultra Instinct ability when he witnesses his advanced movement and response time which resembles that of his when he was in the form during the Tournament of Power.

8 HIS HALO FORMS WHEN HE GOES FULL POWER

Merus is one of the strongest beings in the entire universe as revealed throughout this new Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga in the Dragon Ball Super manga. However, there is something that those who aren't up to date may not be aware of when it comes to this mysterious new character.

When Merus powers up and begins to let his full power rock a halo begins forming around him. This is something never seen with any other character in the series and it is quickly revealed why this happens.

7 HE'S AN ANGEL IN TRAINING

The thing revealed about Merus is that he is in fact an Angel much like Whis. However, unlike Whis, Merus is said to be an Angel in training. Like the rest of his Angelic brothers and sisters, Merus has a blueish-purple skin tone and white hair as well. This is the reason that he is such a powerful character in Universe 7.

During his introduction into the series, it is revealed that Merus was to hide that he was an Angel. This led to him joining one of the universe's intergalactic taskforces so he doesn't violate the Angel law.

6 HE'S THE STRONGEST GALACTIC PATROLMAN

The intergalactic taskforce he joins to hide his Angelic identity is, of course, that of the Galactic Patrolmen. This puts Merus in a position to partner up with the likes of characters like Jaco the Galactic Patrolman that fans were introduced to in the Dragon Ball film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' as well as the Resurrection 'F' Saga in Dragon Ball Super.

However, Merus is no mere average Galactic Patrolman. This Angel in training's abilities put him in the seat of becoming the number one elite patrolmen of the entire intergalactic taskforce.

5 HE'S TOO FAST FOR EVEN VEGETA TO SEE

When first meeting Goku and Vegeta Merus is able to easily take the two out with his Stun Gun. This is due to the amazing speed that has brought him to the rank he currently holds in the Galactic Patrolmen. It also put him in the position of being in charge of 104 districts of the force.

When meeting Goku and Vegeta he is able to get behind them and gun them both. He moves so fast that both of these powerful Saiyans aren't able to keep up with him visually in their base forms.

4 HIS BEST STRENGTH IS HIS REACTION TIME

One thing that Goku notices when watching Merus goes to work is that one of his main strengths is his amazing reaction time to danger. Merus was trained to anticipate any incoming attack which has left him with the ability to constantly dodge just about everything with the swiftness of Ultra Instinct.

During his sparring match with Goku, this ability was the center of attention. It allowed Merus to easily defeat Goku in his forms from base to the rarely used Super Saiyan 3.

3 HE WAS DESIGNED BY TOYOTARO

Being a manga only character so far it's obvious that Merus was designed by one of the writers and artist of Dragon Ball Super's manga counterpart, Toyotaro. For those who may not know, Toyotaro is Akira Toriyama's chosen successor of the Dragon Ball series.

Toyotaro has drawn Dragon Ball since his childhood and created a popular Dragon Ball AF manga that got him noticed and chosen by Akira Toriyama to help with Dragon Ball Super. Merus is probably one of his most well-known contributions to the mega-franchise.

2 HE WAS MADE TO LOOK OLD-FASHIONED

Toyotaro designed Merus in a way that mirrors the design choices used for his fellow Galactic Patrolman, Jaco. However, these characters were both designed to have a classic look in different ways.

While Jaco was designed to look like an old-fashioned alien, Merus was made to look simply retro. His suit even resembles an old track jacket.

1 HE REGARDS GOKU & VEGETA HIGHLY

Once Merus meets Goku and Vegeta he is already very familiar with the powerful Saiyan duo and makes it a point to show but not brag about his immense power in front of the two.

It is noticed that he holds both of these characters in high regard when he shows his excitement to work with both of them during a mission. He eagerly asks them to help him out in completing this mission as well.
