What makes a great superhuman marriage? Trust? Commitment? Compatibility and understanding? It must certainly help to have been drawn up by some of the world’s best storytellers to face the universe’s troubles head-on — after all, nothing brings a couple together like an alien invasion, right?

Among the Z-Warriors who chose the nuclear family life, each of their marriages tend to have been long-standing. But if there’s to be just one and only one top couple, though… well, that’s up for debate! In this article, we’ll go through 5 facts recognizing Goku and Chi-Chi, and another 5 pointing to Gohan and Videl’s as the most ideal relationship in all of Dragon Ball history!

10 Chi-Chi Is Goku’s Ride Or Die

Just to be in the presence of Goku in the early Dragon Ball days was something like catching up with a comet. At the time Goku and Chi-Chi met, there was nobody else who could step on his Nimbus cloud (a.k.a Kinto Un for the fans of subbed anime) without falling right through it. With Chi-Chi, Goku didn’t always have to roam around in the sky all by himself.

Chi-Chi being able to ride the Nimbus cloud with Goku was a huge indicator that they were soul mates; the trick to staying on Nimbus is to have a clean and pure heart, and if so, it would come flying to you whenever you call. Goku and Chi-Chi are a real match made in fictional heaven.

9 Videl Is The Perfect Sidekick

If there’s anything that could make Gohan and Videl’s relationship rank above the competition, it’s the bond they share both when they’re in the spotlight of public view, as well as in their masked alter-ego lives.

When it comes to being a hero of justice, Videl lets Gohan do what he has to do with very minimal nagging or complaints. Videl even joins in with her husband’s vigilante duties as the Great Saiyawoman, earning her major cool points on the Number-One-Wifey scale.

8 Chi-Chi’s Fight For Love

Chi-Chi beats up Goku in Dragon Ball Super

Any long-standing couple has their stories about the beginning stages of their relationship that seem to re-spark the passion, Chi-Chi's gleamy-eyed reminiscing is a great example. Because of his constant desire to test his fighting abilities, a sparring match made perfect sense for Goku and Chi-Chi’s first date.

Goku’s strength as a youth — obviously due to his Saiyan D.N.A — made it hard for anyone to provide enough of a challenge to keep his interest for very long. But as a descendent of the Ox King and having her own considerable Martial Arts training, Chi-Chi was able to keep up with Goku, and therefore won his respect.

7 Gohan and Videl Took The Slowly But Surely Approach

It’s definitely heartwarming to know that in between all the threats to human civilization caused by androids, aliens, and everything in between, that there was still an appreciation for old-fashioned courtship.

Even with the whirlwind of events bringing them closer together, Gohan and Videl took their time with each other. As a result, they are able to enjoy being a significant part of each others’ daily lives without having their personalities clashing.

6 Chi-Chi Got Her Housewife Degree For Goku

Anime Goku And Chi-Chi Lock Eyes

In a few filler episodes at the end of Dragon Ball, Chi-Chi expresses to the Octagon/Teeth-All-Gone Lady her aspiration to be the best wife in the world for Goku, as she sees him as the world’s greatest husband.

Without plumbing or anything high-tech out in the middle of the woods, Chi-Chi held her own through a hardcore housewife training routine with the elderly lady. After they found the Bansho Fan, the lady gave the newlyweds her blessing and a wedding gift, saying she was sure Chi-Chi would be a great wife.

5 Gohan And Videl Are True Soul Mates

During the Buu Saga, all of the remaining Z-Fighters and Z-Family members had resigned themselves to the belief that both Gohan and Vegeta were dead, but Videl refused to accept it. Well, it turned out she was absolutely right!

When Vegeta told everyone that Gohan was dead, they assumed it was true without any question, even to the point of searching high and low in heaven for him. Videl must have noticed a special connection between them that let her know Gohan was alright, because not even his parents could tell that he was still in the world of the living.

4 Even Though Goku’s Crazy Sometimes, Chi-Chi Totally Trusts Him

You have to give Chi-Chi her props just for facilitating Goku’s Saiyan appetite for the fight, but with his extra-terrestrial roots, there were bound to be some major cultural differences for the couple to work out. Thankfully, the challenges didn’t kill the vibe.

Even in the face of the illusionary zombie-soldiers and snarling dragon on the way to find the Bansho fan, Chi-Chi opted out of running down what looked like a delightful path to escape (also an illusion). Although shooting straight into the mouth of the dragon maybe wasn’t the kosher thing to do, Chi-Chi believed in Goku’s decision-making. It does help that he was EXACTLY RIGHT about how to handle the situation, but Chi-Chi was right there with him.

3 Gohan Stood Up To His Dad For Videl

Thanks to Goku’s experience bartering with perverted old martial arts masters, Gohan was able to reach a power level that made it possible to take a stand against Majin Buu. Before the unlocking ritual, though, Gohan had to put his foot down to protect his future wife’s honor.

When they released the 15 generations previous Kaioshin (Old Kai), Goku figured he could convince the old man the same as he did Master Roshi: by encouraging his lecherous habits. Goku promised to let Old Kai get his hands on a real-life woman if he would teach the Z-Warriors a way to beat Majin Buu. What really put the nail in Goku’s coffin was him suggesting Videl for the role, and Gohan was completely not having it! Kudos, Gohan.

2 Goku And Chi-Chi Are Living Nat King Cole’s Unforgettable

If a DBZ fan ever listens to Nat King Cole’s classic “Unforgettable,” there’s a good chance they’d reminisce over Goku and Chi-Chi’s rollercoaster of a relationship. Before their match in the Tenkaichi Tournament, for example. It did take some time for Goku to remember her, but Chi-Chi stayed adamant about her shot at the perfect marriage.

Although Chi-Chi was understandably ticked off, she made it fun for Goku by promising to remind him of her identity only if he won their match. In the ring, Goku played it gentlemanly, using the force of his fist hitting the wind and sending her flying for a ring out… And they lived happily ever after.

1 A Superstar Marriage That Worked

Before finding out that Gohan had actually saved planet Earth, Videl knew that he was something special. Nobody could convince her that Gohan wasn’t a catch — not her father, her friends, or a jealous actor hired to play the role of her husband in a movie.

Gohan got a good deal as well, marrying the daughter of the super-rich and popular Martial Artist, Hercule. Though it was a high-profile relationship, Gohan and Videl kept their figurative feet on the ground, neither of them falling victim to fame and fortune.
