Dragon Ball is one of the biggest anime of all time, whether it’s been through anime, video games, or other supplemental materials. The debut of Dragon Ball Super brought back a lot of support for the series and the latest chapter has added a lot of interesting ideas to the canon, including Super Saiyan God and Gods of Destruction.

Super Saiyan God is first seen in the series during Goku’s battle against Beerus, but it’s turned into a helpful tool for him and several others. Accordingly, here are 5 Super Saiyan Gods that should be able to beat Beerus and 5 reasons why they can’t.

10 Beat: Goku

Of the handful of Super Saiyan Gods that have appeared in Dragon Ball Super, Goku is one of the few that’s actually faced off against Beerus. Goku’s battle against Beerus marks his first experience with his Super Saiyan God powers. He’s learning how to control them on the fly, but still manages to do all right against the God of Destruction.

Goku’s talents (and levels of transformation) have only gotten stronger since their duel. Goku continues to work hard, while Beerus’ strength seems to have leveled off. Goku may now be in a position to overcome him.

9 Why They Can’t: Beerus’ Full Power Has Yet To Be Seen

Universe 7's God of Destruction Beerus destroys planet in Dragon Ball Super

Audiences get a glimpse of Beerus squaring off against a Super Saiyan God during the Battle of Gods film and its adaptation during Dragon Ball Super’s first big arc. Goku holds his own against Beerus here, but the series makes it very clear that Beerus is only fighting at a small fraction of his power.

Goku and Beerus’ combined energies in conflict is too much for the planet and galaxy to withhold. It’s probably for the best that Beerus’ full strength has yet to be seen as it may result in there being no witnesses left to speak about it.

8 Beat: Xeno Trunks

The Dragon Ball video games have really embraced outlandish transformations and fusions in an effort to feature as many new and powerful characters as possible and see what sticks. Xeno Trunks, a member of the esteemed Time Patrol, is a character from Super Dragon Ball Heroes. He goes through the same Super Saiyan God ritual that Goku does and becomes a Super Saiyan God to overcome the demon, Demigra. Super Saiyan God Xeno Trunks is particularly powerful because he carries the rage and skills of Xeno Trunks’ pained existence, which is able to fuel Super Saiyan God in intense ways.

7 Why They Can’t: Beerus Can Imprison People In Objects

Gods of Destruction have incredibly physical strength, otherworldly knowledge, and extreme endurance. All of this is enough to overcome most opponents, but he Gods also have more creative methods to dispose of their enemies that they only bring out on special occasions. Before the events of Dragon Ball, one of Beerus’ more sadistic moves involves him trapping Old Kai in the Z Sword. The fact that he can do this to a Kai means that he could also imprison someone like Goku in this manner, especially if he can catch them by surprise.

6 Beat: Copy Vegeta

Anime Dragon Ball Super Saiyan Blue Copy Vegeta

Copy Vegeta is a character that appears during a short filler arc in Dragon Ball Super, but the character has gained a strangely positive reception. Standard Super Saiyan God Vegeta would likely handle himself just fine against Beerus, but the reason why Copy Vegeta is singled out here is because the amorphous entity can also use his evasive blob skills or even absorb Beerus just like it did Vegeta. Copy Vegeta is also a mindless drone, so if it sacrifices itself to take out Beerus, the stakes are much lower than if the actual Vegeta were to do so.

5 Why They Can’t: Super Saiyan God Has A Time Limit

There’s a comparable nature of power between Gods of Destruction and Super Saiyan Gods, but even with that in mind there’s a very crucial difference between the two. Super Saiyan God is a transformation that puts an incredible strain on the user’s body and it can only be maintained for a certain amount of time. A time limit is never helpful in battle and can lead to extreme or desperate actions. Beerus on the other hand just has access to his power. If he wanted to he could just run the clock until the Super Saiyan God loses their strength.

4 Beat: Goku Black

Goku Black may seem like another strange alternative addition to include here, especially since some just view him as an evil version of Goku. There’s a lot more that drives Goku Black forward though and Zamasu’s rabid rage that lives inside of him is something that shouldn’t be underestimated. However, what’s particularly important about Goku Black is that he retains Zamasu’s immortality, even after their fusion malforms. This means that Goku Black could gain the advantage over Beerus in time since he actually has immortality on his side.

3 Why They Can’t: Gods Of Destruction Can Time Travel

Dragon Ball Super introduces Gods of Destruction into the series, but with them also comes the news that there are multiple universes. This news opens a ton of possibilities for the series, but it also indicates that Beerus (and Whis) have a much greater awareness of the universe and that their problems are a lot more significant in nature. Due to the vast responsibilities and obligations of Gods of Destruction, they actually are able to travel through time (or universes) in certain situations. Super Saiyan Gods are strong, but they can’t defy the laws of time and space like that.

2 Beat: Yamoshi

Dragon Ball Legends gacha game

Yamoshi is more of a mythical legend than a major player in Dragon Ball, but he’s still a character that causes a lot of discussion. Yamoshi is the first ever Saiyan to achieve the Super Saiyan God transformation. He appears on Planet Vegeta in a means to dissuade the violent ways of the Saiyan race, but doesn’t succeed. Yamoshi’s intent and actions put the Super Saiyan God on the radars of Beerus, Frieza, and the Namekians. Not enough about Yamoshi is known, but the legends that surround him give him an apocryphal power that could perhaps intimidate or surpass Beerus.

1 Why They Can’t: Beerus Has The Power Of Hakai

Anime Dragon Ball Beerus Destroys Zamasu Hakai

It’d be ridiculous to spend time discussing the strengths of Gods of Destruction without getting into their actual destructive ability, Hakai. Beerus is a master of multiple energy attacks and he can obliterate an entire planet with ease. This is still all within the normal limits of his power. Hakai is a move of much greater significance that permanently erases someone from existence. It’s the last ditch effort for Gods of Destruction, but it’s nearly impossible to counter and it’d take care of a Super Saiyan God without issue.
