When the Androids made their first appearance after Frieza's defeat in Dragon Ball Z they struck terror into our hearts with their incredible strength, durability, and devastating techniques that made them the strongest Earth-grown opponents that the Z-Fighters have ever encountered.

Over the years, we've see many different androids, from Eighter to Cell, and we've even seen two former villains, Androids 17 and 18, turn into two of Universe 7's strongest heroes. While we've enjoyed their contribution to the series, there are quite a few things that just don't add up about Dr. Gero's creations. We've highlighted 10 things that don't make sense about the Androids no matter what angle you look at them from.

10 They Possess Limitless Energy Despite Being Mostly Human

Before Dr. Gero turned them into Androids, 17 and 18 were just normal humans. Since Android 18 can still have children, we know that for the most part, their organs were left untouched, but this doesn't explain how Dr. Gero was able to bestow these mostly biological beings with unlimited reserves of energy. 17 and 18 can still get winded if they take too much damage, but they don't really get tired from physical exertion in the same way other organic beings do. Getting tired is a basic biological reaction to overexertion, and since 17 and 18 are mostly human, they should run out of energy like everyone else.

9 Dr. Gero Didn't Make Himself An Infinite Energy Model

Anime Android 17 Kills Dr. Gero

Dragon Ball Z clearly showed us that infinite energy models like 17 and 18 were much stronger than Androids who had to absorb their energy from their organic opponents. Surely Dr. Gero knows this, and yet he still turned himself into an energy-absorbing model. Sure, his judgment may have been a little biased due to the realization that infinite energy models were more rebellious in nature, but in making himself one, he would've possessed the power needed to stand up to his creations when they challenged his authority.

8 Android 17 Survived A Self-Destruction

While we were glad to see that Android 17 had actually survived his self-detonation in order to protect Goku and Vegeta from Jiren's Power Impact during the Tournament of Power, we also don't understand how this was physically possible. It further didn't make sense that he had enough energy left over to even stand after blowing himself up.

We've seen several self-destructions throughout this entire franchise, from Saibamen to Chiaotzu and even Vegeta, but the only other person we saw survive this maneuver was Super Saiyan 4 Goku when he self-destructed in a vain attempt to take Super 17 out in Dragon Ball GT. This didn't make sense either, but unfortunately, we'll have to dissect Goku in another article.

7 Android 13 Wasn't Just Built With The Extra Parts From Androids 14 and 15

If you watched the Dragon Ball Z film Super Android 13!, you know that after he absorbed the spare parts from his fallen comrades (Androids 14 and 15), Android 13 gained strength that rivaled Imperfect Cell's power. If Dr. Gero truly meant for Android 13 to be such an unstoppable force, why didn't he just build him with those spare parts anyway? We get that Dr. Gero wouldn't want to give Android 13 too much power right off the bat, but with Androids 14 and 15 always near him, what would stop him from just ripping out those parts himself if he truly wanted to?

6 Absorbing Androids 17 and 18 Gives Cell So Much Power

Androids 17 and 18 were never a match for Cell, even in his weakest form. Many of us were confused as to why he needed to absorb Androids 17 and 18 specifically to reach the height of his power. With the cells of so many talented warriors already residing within him, why would he need to absorb these Androids who were far weaker than him in order to attain perfection?

5 Dr. Gero Didn't Know About Super Saiyans Yet His Androids Were Stronger Than Them

Androids 19 and 20 Shocked to See Super Saiyan Vegeta

Over the course of the series, Dr. Gero deployed tiny surveillance drones that secretly gathered data on Goku and some of the strongest opponents he faced over the course of his life. In turn, Dr. Gero's machine built the perfect Androids able to combat whatever techniques Goku picked up over the years.

Since his research stopped when Goku and the others went off to Namek, seeing Goku as a Super Saiyan was a complete shock to him, and yet, his creations were still able to compete with, and even overwhelm, Super Saiyans. If he could make Androids this strong with Earth's resources, what was the point of the surveillance in the first place? Why not just make the Androids as strong as they could possibly be to ensure Goku's demise?

4 Two Versions of Android 17 Combining Makes Him Stronger Than a Super Saiyan 4

In Dragon Ball GT, Dr. Gero met his "brother from another solar system", Dr. Myuu, during his stay in Hell. After brainwashing Android 17 to revert back to his evil ways, the two scientists forced him to merge with Hell Fighter 17 in order to give birth to Super 17, the strongest Android that we've ever seen in the entire franchise. For some reason, despite neither Android 17 or Hell Fighter 17 possessing the ability to absorb ki blasts, Super 17 inherits this characteristic. He also becomes so strong that not even Super Saiyan 4 Goku could defeat him on his own. Many fans have questioned the legitimacy of this absurd power increase, since Android 17 on his own wasn't even stronger than Imperfect Cell. Merging two Android 17s shouldn't even make Super 17 stronger than a Super Saiyan 2. We want to know where exactly all of this insane power came from. We know fusions in Dragon Ball typically grant the fused being an incredible boost of power far greater than that of their unfused counterparts, but Super 17 being stronger than a Super Saiyan 4 was a bit of a stretch.

3 Android 17 Got So Strong Despite Never Fighting/Training With Stronger Opponents

Where we last saw him in Dragon Ball Z, Android 17 was barely stronger than Super Namek Piccolo. Fast-forward to Dragon Ball Super and he's strong enough to go head-to-head with Super Saiyan Blue Goku. We later learned that for all these years, he's been fending off an armada of poachers on an island filled with rare flora and fauna. But as we learned early-on in Dragon Ball Z, even a character with Nappa's power level could take out an entire army without even breaking a sweat. We've never seen Android 17 training with anyone else of his caliber, and he was definitely missing in action during the battle against Buu, Beerus, Universe 6, and Zamasu, so how was he able to garner such unbelievable strength when all he was doing for years was beating up poachers whose weapons couldn't even put a dent in him in the first place?

2 Android 18 Kissed Krillin

Android 18 Kisses Krillin

After taking down Vegeta and knocking out Trunks, Tien, and Piccolo, Androids 17 and 18 decided to spare Krillin. Back then, we had no idea that Android 18 and Krillin were destined to become lovers, and were taken completely off guard by the kiss Android 18 planted on Krillin's cheek. Even back then, the kiss seemed a little out place.

At the time, Android 18's sole objective was to kill Goku (and any other human that stood in her way) so why would she kiss his bald friend without even causing him just a teeny bit of pain? This almost felt like an attempt for Toriyama to force a romance between the two instead of allowing it to develop organically as the series progressed.

1 The Ki Of An Android Can't Be Sensed Despite Vast Reserves Of Energy

Part of what made the Androids so formidable was the fact that until they made the first move, it was impossible to detect them by their ki. But how does this make any sense at all? We know the Androids possess huge reserves of energy at all times. Even Androids 19 and 20 had to store the energy they absorbed from their victims. We're baffled that the Z-Fighters couldn't even sense the limitless quantities of energy deep within Androids 17 and 18, especially since they're able to sense powerful energy signatures from miles away under normal circumstances.
