What Is Doraemon?

Doraemon, written and illustrated by Fujiko F. Fujio, began its serialization in Shogakukan in December 1969 with a staggering 1,345 chapters from 1970 to 1996. The series shot up in popularity and received three anime adaptations. The first one premiered in April 1973 and was produced by Nippon TeleMovie Productions, but the series has become somewhat of a rarity as it aired for only 26 episodes and none of these exist online. Six years later, a second adaptation of Doraemon premiered, this time produced by Shin-Ei Animation, and ran for eight seasons. The third and current adaptation premiered in 2005 and is joint produced by Shin-Ei Animation and Asatsu-DK. Wasabi Mizuta (One Piece and Pokemon: Best Wishes) voices the titular character.

The series follows Doraemon, a robot cat from the 22nd century, who is sent back to the past by Nobita Nobi's descendants in the hopes that he can help Nobita, currently a lazy ten-year-old boy, enjoy a better future. Doraemon is known for his love for dorayaki, a Japanese sweet treat filled with red bean paste, and his 4D pouch which has the ability to store gadgets and tools of various shapes and sizes. Since its conception, Doraemon has become a Japanese cultural icon, selling over 250 million copies as of 2019 and, at one point, surging ahead of Godzilla as the highest-grossing film franchise with the release of its 2013 anime film.
