Although it had been suggested, as recently as yesterday, that the Locke & Key pilot rejected by Fox could land at The CW or Syfy, hope has run out for the comic-book adaptation.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the sets at the city’s 31st Street Studios, where most of the pilot was filmed, will be dismantled at the end of the month, dashing the possibility that the supernatural thriller might emerge on another network. Seemingly sealing its fate, a Fox spokesman confirmed to the newspaper that Locke & Key won’t move forward.
Produced by 20th Century Fox TV and Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Fringe), Locke & Key was based on the acclaimed horror comic by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez about a mother and three children who, after a tragedy, return to the old family home in Massachusetts, a mansion whose numerous doors that can transport residents to other worlds or bestow them with supernatural abilities. The pilot starred Miranda Otto, Jesse McCartney, Sarah Bolger, Nick Stahl, Skylar Gaertner and Ksenia Solo.
While the adaptation was described as “magical” and “beautiful” — The Futon Critic said it “definitely has the makings of something great,” and praised the acting — Fox entertainment chairman Peter Rice said that, in the end, Locke & Key simply didn’t fit into the network’s schedule.
