Ten years after its publication, Doomwar still holds some exciting and majorly consequential events for Wakanda, Black Panther and the greater Marvel Universe. The crossover featured heroes from all over The Marvel Universe to aid Wakanda against a hostile takeover by Doctor Doom. The 2010 event, by Jonathan Maberry and Scot Eaton, had a massive impact on the Wakandan nation. By the end, Wakanda was saved, but at a great cost which affected the entire Marvel Universe. Here is a complete look at Doomwar, the build-up to the event and how it impacted Wakanda and The Black Panther for years to come.

What Happened Before Doomwar

Black Panther Shuri

During "Dark Reign," The Black Panther was approached by Namor, The Sub-Mariner, to join Norman Osborn's Cabal of villains. King T'Challa refused, after which he was brutally beaten by Doctor Doom's forces. With T'Challa comatose, a new Black Panther was needed to defend Wakanda. T'Challa's sister, Shuri, was chosen to be given the powers and mantle of The Black Panther, making her the Queen of Wakanda. After T'Challa recovered, the former Black Panther made a pact with another entity for new abilities. During Shuri's time as the official Black Panther, a new tribe, called The Desturi, accumulated great influence. This group was very xenophobic, desiring a return to Wakanda's isolationist origins. The Desturi's growing voice caused a political divide which weakened Wakanda. Moreover, Storm was married to T'Challa at the time, making her part of the royal family. Since Ororo Munroe was a foreigner to Wakanda, she became an easy target for The Desturi. Storm's mutant powers did not earn her any favor with the group either.

What Happened During Doomwar

At the beginning of Doomwar, The Desturi were nearly in full control of Wakanda. Storm was placed on trial for treason, practicing witchcraft and crimes against humanity. Refusing to cooperate, Storm was sent to a prison cell. Meanwhile, T'Challa and Shuri approached The X-Men for help in freeing the Wakandan Queen and fellow X-Man. T'Challa explained that they believed Doctor Doom was behind The Desturi takeover, seeking Wakanda's supply of vibranium. Indeed, Doom had previously placed nanite cameras in Wakanda's citizens, spying on the nation to discover where the precious metal was hidden. Furthermore, Doom had also secretly aided The Desturi's rise to power.

With this knowledge in hand, T'Challa and Shuri took a small band of X-Men to defend their nation from The Desturi and Doom's forces. The X-Men and both Panthers fought their way to Storm and managed to free Wakanda. Yet Doom was able to reach the vibranium vault. Taking off with The Wakandans' precious resource, Doom established factories of vibranium around the world. T'Challa and Shuri went to The Fantastic Four, seeking aid against Doom. Together, the heroes struck at Doom's factories around the world. These factories contained vibranium-enhanced Doombots, putting up quite a fight against The Panthers and The FF.

In an unpredictable tactical move, T'Challa decided to recruit Deadpool against Doom's forces. Mr. Fantastic, putting little trust in The Merc With The Mouth, recruited War Machine as well. T'Challa and Shuri led the heroes on a direct strike against Doom's castle in Latveria. Doom powered-up significantly at this point, using a new vibranium armor that could control all metal. As a last resort, T'Challa used a device that turned all of the world's vibranium inert. While many were shocked, believing that T'Challa just doomed Wakanda, Shuri was hopeful, believing T'Challa saved his people. After Storm destroyed all of the remaining Doombots, the heroes helped in the effort to rebuild Wakanda.

What Happened After Doomwar

Black Panther Man Without Fear

Quite possibly the biggest consequence of Doomwar was rendering all vibranium inert. The precious metal became useless, forcing The Wakandans to rely on other resources for economic growth. Since Wakanda had relied on vibranium for so long, they no longer had a crutch on which they could lean. Removing vibranium from the equation totally changed Wakanda's place in The Marvel Universe until 2015's Secret Wars. Additionally, T'Challa, with no title, no powers and no vibranium, decided to leave Wakanda for the time being. The Black Panther accepted Daredevil's request to watch over Hell's Kitchen for a while, becoming the new Man Without Fear. Fighting on a more grounded level, T'Challa got to experience life as an ordinary man. Of course,  T'Challa later made a deal with the panther god, becoming "King of The Dead." While Shuri remained Wakanda's Black Panther for a time, T'Challa would be The Black Panther of Necropolis, communicating with Black Panthers of the past. While it may go overlooked after ten years, Doomwar left lasting consequences for both Wakanda and The Black Panther.
