The following article contains spoilers from Dark Crisis #1, on sale now.

The world's reaction to the death of the Justice League has been varied. However, it was not just limited to civilians and heroes realizing the implications of their loss, but also the villains of the DCU. In Dark Crisis #1 (by Joshua Williamson, Daniel Sampere, Alejandro Sanchez, Tom Napolitano), Superman and the Flash were fending off an onslaught from Kobra, and noticed that they were fighting differently.

Ever since the world learned about the fall of the Justice League, doomsday cults around the globe have been acting increasingly violent, almost desperate. It would seem that they have taken the loss of the Justice League as a sign that the end is near. This means that despite spending years trying to defeat the Justice League, they ultimately made these cults feel safe at the end of the day. With that safety net gone, so too has the security of knowing that there will be a future.

DC Cults Are Scared

What is interesting here is that these cults are not entirely wrong. Another crisis is rapidly approaching, but this time around they don't believe the Justice League will be there to protect them. As a consequence, they have gone out into the world to lash out. These cults may be venting their frustrations, but given that the Flash realized how scared they were, it's likely that they were terrified of whatever horror they believed was coming for them. Furthermore, they probably wanted someone else to intervene and quickly seal their fate rather than face what was to come.

Ironically, this means that despite preaching over and over again that "the end is nigh" these cultists don't actually want the world to end and are scared of what it would look like. In this regard, the Justice League was a shield against an unknown future, making them feel safe that tomorrow would come because the world's greatest heroes were there. Now, that sense of security is gone.

The Death of the Justice League Is a Sign of Doom

It really points to how much of a calming effect the League had on the world as a whole. Despite many wishing them dead, those same people also recognize that without the Justice League, the world would have been destroyed countless times over. Their mere presence inspired a peace of mind that kept the world intact. In its absence however, the effects of their disappearance is on full display as villains not only try to do their worst, but start to panic at the notion that tomorrow is not a certainty.

The only problem with this revelation is that by acting out in this way and attacking the world at large, they are hastening the demise that they fear. While the remaining heroes try to stop them from doing any more harm, they are unable to stay alert for the very threat that these cultists are running from. So as they scramble to form a new Justice League, the remaing heroes must deal with the actions of a handful of panicking cultists. As a result, they are wasting precious time in order to stop the coming darkness.
