The following contains spoilers for Doom Patrol Season 4, Episode 4, "Casey Patrol," now streaming on HBO Max.

The fourth episode of Doom Patrol Season Four appears to bring back a minor character from Season 3 as the Big Bad set on unleashing Immortus.

"Casey Patrol" saw the team take a back seat while Dorthey, Maura Lee and the newly introduced Casey Brinke, aka Space Case, fought off the latter's mad scientist father, Torminox and the transformed Dannizens. At episode close, Torminox took a necklace Dorthey had intended to use to summon her father so she could say her lingering thoughts. He took it to a dark room with a figure shown only from behind at a drawing board where he designed the Space Case comics series. Doctor Janus from the previous episode arrived first, handing over the pendent containing Rita's emotions before Torminox handed over the necklace he took from Dorthey. The figure then releases these will help bring Immortus. Although the figure's face and name remain hidden, the credits show he's played by Daniel Annone.

Annone previously appeared in Doom Patrol Season 3, Episode 7 in a minor but pivotal role -- Wally Sage, the meta who can make illustrations real. Coincidentally, Wally also happened to be the one who killed Rita's lover, Malcolm, during Madame Rouge's betrayal of the Sisterhood of Dada. Doom Patrol had also dropped his name briefly in Season 1, Episode 13 as the adman that created Flex Mentallo.

Who is Wally Sage in Doom Patrol?

Wally Sage first appeared in 1990's The Doom Patrol #38 (Lost In Space), written by Grant Morrison with art by Mark Mckenna and Richard Case. In the comics, he went by the name Wallace Sage, a powerful psychic who created Flex Mentallo. Sage wrote a series of comics called 'My Greenest Adventure' in which Mentallo starred, with the comic entirely written in green. He was eventually captured by the government and forced to work in the Ant Farm with the Men from N.O.W.H.E.R.E, unwittingly creating weapons for them -- something Wally's appearance in Doom Patrol Season Three briefly hinted at. However, he did not appear as a villain in the comics.

Doom Patrol's new season has added multiple new villains, with Sendhil Ramamurthy Mr. 104, Doctor Janus, Torminox and the zombie Were-Butts. Given it has yet to specify Annone is playing Wally Sage -- he's credited as "The Artist" -- and the character did not feature as a villain in the comics, it's unclear what his intentions and role might be in the show.

Doom Patrol stars Brendan Fraser as Cliff Steele, Matt Bomer as Larry Trainor, Diana Guerrero as Crazy Jane, April Bowlby as Rita Farr, Joivan Wade as Vic Stone and Michelle Gomez as Madame Rouge. Seasons 1-3 are available now on HBO Max, with new episodes of the fourth season airing every Thursday.
