As Doom Patrol's Negative Man, Matt Bomer brings to life the ersatz team's resident pessimist. But despite his own personal problems, Larry Trainor is still part of a family (of sorts), and that means dealing with group dynamics... including those of a romantic nature.

During a recent Q&A, Bomer was asked if his character had any deeper relationships with other members of the team. But rather than focus on himself, Bomer shifted the attention to two others. "Well, I think Crazy Jane and Robot Man is borderline a romance, isn't it," he asked. "It's not really just a friendship."

"Obviously, they're circumstantial... they've been prevented from ever consummating, I don't know. Dr. Niles Caulder is pretty creative. But it almost seems to be a great romance. Everything is kind of 'meet-cute' awkward, he said/she said, 'I love you/I hate you' kind of situation. And it's so perfectly written because, you know, any one of her characters can come up at any time, say 'fuck it,' and walk away."

Bringing the question back to Negative Man, Bomer spoke about the connection he sees between his character and Rita Farr (April Bowlby), though it's obviously not a romantic one. "I think in terms of the team, the person he's the most close to is Rita. He seems to really be able to understand her, tell when she's having episodes. He has a good bead on who she is, what her history is, what kind of pathos she carries around with her. I think he has empathy and a real connection with her.

"I know back in that time, my Grandmother would say 'oh, he's a bachelor.' I feel like Rita has worked with a couple of 'bachelors' in her time in the movie industry.," Bomer added, referring to his character's sexual orientation. "I think she understands who he is, and they probably don't have to talk about it. They probably spend time together and watch her old movies."

Streaming now on DC Universe, Doom Patrol stars Brendan Fraser as Cliff Steele, Matt Bomer as Larry Trainor, Diana Guerrero as Crazy Jane, Alan Tudyk as Mr. Nobody, April Bowlby as Rita Farr, Joivan Wade as Vic Stone and Timothy Dalton as Niles Caulder.
