Despite technically spinning off of DC Universe's live-action TitansDoom Patrol feels like a completely different superhero universe. Even  showrunners Jeremy Carver and Sarah Schechter seem to agree. "We're asking fans to come to this version of the show knowing that it is the same world, but it's a different continuity," Carver said. "While there are elements of Titans and the show's introduction of our team, not all characterizations are the same and it's just best to come into it with a fresh look."

There's no one who more obviously embodies that more than Negative Man, who was unreduced as a somewhat carefree and quippy character in Titans to a self-loathing outcast in Doom Patrol. During a recent Q&A session in Los Angeles, Matt Bomer, who stars in the series as Larry Trainor, aka Negative Man, reinforced that idea, and explained the differences between the two dueling versions of the character.

"I took the given circumstances and direction from one director and took the given circumstances and direction from another director/creator," Bomer said, indicating that it all came down to who was in charge of which show. "What I think is interesting is what a lot of these showrunners who are huge comic book fans are doing, they're basically becoming the latest iteration of a writer/illustrator team to make their interpenetration of a comic. The same way someone reinterpreted it after Grant Morrison, they're doing the same thing, just in cinematic form.

"The Titans version, Larry's this up-beat, moonwalking in the kitchen, got a quip for everything, he's funny," the actor continued. "In Jeremy [Carver's] version, he's self-loathing, he's like a knot inside, he's holding in an incredible amount of pain and pathos at all times, he doesn't really how to connect to anybody or himself. So, you know, they were just two radically different interpretations of the same character. And my job, always, is how can I serve that. That's really any good actor's job on a project... how can I serve the story?"
