WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the Doom Patrol Season 1, Episode 14 "Penultimate Patrol," streaming now on DC Universe.

The DC Universe has set the bar for genuinely weird superhero television withDoom Patrol. The heroes alone are strange enough, but when you look at villains like the facial hair-eating Beard Hunter, it's easy to see why this series stands out as a truly different alternative to what the Arrowverse and Marvel TV offers.

Much of Doom Patrol's eccentricity can be directly attributed to Alan Tudyk's Mr. Nobody who, from the very first episode, set himself up as a fourth wall-breaking, reality-altering pain in the butt. The intrigue has grown every episode, in part because the show never really gave us the villain's full backstory. However, in the "Penultimate Patrol," we finally get insight into his past, and it's as sad as it is dark.

Earlier in the season, we saw Nobody being experimented on by Nazi scientist Von Fuchs, only for Niles Caulder (Timothy Dalton) to interrupt and cause the process to go awry. This led to Nobody developing his powers and vowing revenge on Niles for helping turn him into this lunatic. The series then jumped ahead a few decades, to Nobody kidnapping Niles and attacking the Doom Patrol, taking them into a new dimension via... a farting donkey.

The dysfunctional team escaped but outside of that, we've never gotten details into rivalry between Niles and Nobody to see just why the latter followed the path of evil. But as this episode opens, we see him in the '40s, having a meal at a diner with his girlfriend, Millie. Sadly, Eric Morden (as he was known back then), just got booted from the Brotherhood of Evil, and is distraught over losing his place in the organization to the gorilla known as Monsieur Mallah.

At this point in their lives, Millie is tired of him trying to gain entry into evil societies, and dumps him. She sees him as nothing more than a pathetic soul trying way too hard, evidenced by the Brotherhood not even deeming him dangerous enough to kill upon excommunication. Morden desperately tries to persuade her to stay, but Millie shatters his heart, telling him all he'll ever be is a "nobody." At this point, it's safe to assume these verbal daggers are what drove him to head to South America to seek out Von Fuchs years later so he could prove to Millie, as well as the Brotherhood, he truly was somebody.

In addition to his full organ story, "Penultimate Patrol" offers one more piece of new Mr. Nobody information regarding the place he kidnaps people to. Thanks to Flex Mentallo and Danny the Street, the Doom Patrol figures out the Chief is currently being held in the White Space. Nobody is able to tap into and harness the powers of this dimension, which is basically the white gutters between comic panels -- a realm which allows him to fill in the blanks and create new universes. It's a pretty meta ability for avid comic book readers, and yet able to be understood even by those who only watch the show.
