Doom Patrol star Mark Sheppard has confirmed that the upcoming Season 4 finale was written to also serve as a potential series finale.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sheppard revealed that Doom Patrol showrunner Jeremy Carver saw the writing on the wall and wrote the Season 4 finale as if it might be the last episode of the HBO Max series. "Genuinely, I do know that Jeremy was prepared for this," said Sheppard. "So the end of Doom Patrol, season 4B, is really good. It's really good as an ending."

Sheppard, who has recurred on Doom Patrol since Season 1 as occult detective Willoughby Kipling, also took the time to bid farewell to the fan-favorite DC series, saying, "We got four years of Doom Patrol out under the wire, and we made something beautiful. That was a joy. I mean, it was an absolute joy." Doom Patrol was canceled in January 2023 alongside fellow DC series Titans, with both shows slated to end with their respective, ongoing fourth seasons.

Jovian Wade Bids Farewell to Cyborg

After Doom Patrol's cancellation was made public, actor Jovian Wade released a statement that both thanked the cast, crew and fans of the DC show and said goodbye to his character, Cyborg. "The last 4 Years of my life have been an absolute dream," he wrote. "The memories I will take with me from this will be unmeasured. The lessons, the skill, the insight, the friendships and the story’s. It was LITERALLY my dream." He continued, "Victor stone, thank you for letting me connect. And bring you to life. In doing so you brought me to life in a whole new way."

Doom Patrol fans have also started to mourn the loss of the series, with many paying their respects to the show through social media posts. However, while the show won't be returning for a fifth season, fans still have six more episodes of Doom Patrol left to look forward to. Set to release later this year, Season 4's second half is expected to find the titular team resolving the looming apocalyptic threat of Immortus and the imminent Buttpocalypse.

In addition to Sheppard and Wade, Doom Patrol Season 4 stars Diane Guerrero as Crazy Jane, April Bowlby as Rita Farr/Elasti-Woman, Matt Bomer and Matthew Zuk as Larry Trainor/Negative Man, Brendan Fraser and Riley Shanahan as Cliff Steele/Robotman and Michelle Gomez as Laura DeMille/Madame Rouge, with Madeline Zima recurring as Casey Brinke/Space Case.

The first six episodes of Doom Patrol Season 4 as well as Seasons 1 to 3 are currently streaming on HBO Max.
