Peyton Elizabeth Lee, star of the Disney Channel show Andi Mack, was previously cast in the title role as Lahela "Doogie" Kameāloha. Doogie is a 16-year-old medical student grappling with her social life, education and family dynamics as a mixed-race child of a Hawaiian father and Irish mother. The elements of Doogie's life spill into the others, as her mother, Dr. Clara Hannon (Kathleen Rose Perkins), is also chief of staff at the hospital where she is doing her residency.

Jason Scott Lee appeared in the live-action version of Mulan as Bori Khan. His credits also include 1993's Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, and Mowgli in Disney's 1994 live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book.

Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. is a reboot of Doogie Howser, M.D. which starred Neil Patrick Harris and ran from 1989 to 1993 on ABC. The 10-episode Disney+ series moves the setting from Los Angeles, and makes Doogie's mother, not her father, the doctor in the family.

Disney+'s Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. will be written by Kourtney Kang, who executive produces the project with Jake Kasdan, Melvin Mar and Dayna and Jesse Bochco. It stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Kathleen Rose Perkins and Jason Scott Lee. The series has yet to receive a premiere date.
