It’s a good time to be Donald Glover.
The actor-writer-rap artist not only has a new record that debuted at the top of the R&B charts, but also won 2 Golden Globes last night for his freshman series “Atlanta.” After collecting trophies for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series and Best Television Series (both in the Musical or Comedy categories), the triple threat was met with questions from the press about his other major project — playing young Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars anthology film.
“Lando’s a big deal to me. It was literally the first toy I ever got,” Glover told USA Today, explaining that the role will be more than just another professional triumph for him. “When you have something that’s kind of iconic…where people pay attention to it, it’s hard because you want to live up to the expectation. But all you can do is live up to your own. And Star Wars is really high.”
Glover also spoke to another difficult aspect of such a demanding job: “Not getting to eat anything enjoyable for the rest of my life,” the actor joked.
The still-untitled solo Han Solo film will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller — directors of “The LEGO Movie” — and will star relative newcomer Alden Ehrenreich as the titular space cowboy. It’s set for a 2018 release.
“I really just want to have fun. The directors: they’re amazing. I love the guy who is playing Han. It’s going to be a good time. It’s going to be fun. I’m getting ready to just have fun with those guys.”
If Glover’s current trajectory is any indication, audiences are ready too.
