Despite Hollywood's current pandemic-fueled shutdown, the long-awaited sequel to Space Jam is still on track to be released next year, with NBA superstar Lebron James teaming up with the Looney Toons for another high stakes basketball game.
Among the cast members in the upcoming sequel is Don Cheadle, fresh off his time defending the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though the actor was cast last July, Cheadle's role in the film has been kept under wraps -- until it was inadvertently spoiled by his friend and fellow actor Paul Scheer.
"Actually, Don Cheadle, who I do Black Monday with, he’s the bad guy in Space Jam [2], and he said LeBron’s really great," Scheer revealed in an interview with Cinema Blend. "[Lebron] was great in Trainwreck too."
A sequel to the fan-favorite 1996 NBA-Looney Toons crossover, Space Jam 2 stars James as a fictionalized version of himself, teaming up with other Warner Bros. properties. Principal photography began this past June, during the NBA off-season to accommodate the athletic commitments of its real-life NBA cast members.
Space Jam 2 is directed by Malcolm D. Lee and produced by Ryan Coogler, LeBron James, Duncan Henderson and Maverick Carter. It stars LeBron James, Don Cheadle and Sonequa Martin-Green and is set to release July 16, 2021.
