Avengers: Endgame said goodbye to several Avengers, but for characters like James Rhodes AKA War Machine, the future is pretty ominous.

During the TCA winter press tour, Don Cheadle spoke briefly about his time playing War Machine. He didn't say what was next for Rhodey now that Iron Man was gone, but he did say there were things he'd like to see the character do in the future.

Cheadle said, "If there were to be one, I’d really want to dig into him and maybe even find something that felt closer to the first Iron Man for who he was." He added, “I think they can go anywhere with him now.”

Cheadle referenced 2008's Iron Man, a film which he wasn't apart of though his character, War Machine was. Terrence Howard originated the role, but after pay disputes with Marvel, he left the franchise. Cheadle was brought in to play the character starting with Iron Man 2, appearing in various movies across the MCU pantheon.

When it came to the possibility of War Machine returning for a Disney+ series, Cheadle was reluctant. "I really don't know," he said. "I haven't given it much thought as far as which would be or if either would even be. That was an 11 year journey."
