Dominic Cooper, first rumored last month as the frontrunner to play Jesse Custer, is nearing a deal to star in AMC's "Preacher," according to multiple reports.

Citing anonymous insiders, TheWrap contends the actor hasn't signed on just yet, but that's considered "a mere formality." The Tracking Board carries a similar story.

Seth Rogen, frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg and "Breaking Bad" album Sam Catlin are overseeing the adaptation of the celebrated Vertigo series by Garth Ennis and Steven Dillon.

Cooper, best known for his role as Howard Stark in "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "Marvel's Agent Carter," also starred in "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," Need For Speed" and "Dracula Untold."

He'll join Ruth Negga as Tulip O'Hare, Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy, Ian Colletti as Arseface and Lucy Griffiths as Emily Woodrow, a character created for the television series.
