The first Dr. Dolittle film released in 1967, with Rex Harrison playing the titular doctor. The movie drew from three of original writer Hugh Lofting's tales: The Story of Doctor Dolittle, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle and Doctor Dolittle's Circus. Though it wasn't well-received critically, the film won Academy Awards for Best Original Song and Best Visual Effects, with a nomination for Best Picture.

While there was no direct sequel to the movie, Fox reused the idea in 1998 with Eddie Murphy playing the title role. Unlike Harrison's Dr. Dolittle, Murphy's iteration was not based on the books, instead only sharing the concept of a doctor who can speak with animals. Murphy's movies were successful and grossed more than $470 million dollars worldwide during their time in theaters.

Directed by Stephen Gaghan, Dolittle stars Robert Downey Jr., Tom Holland, Jim Broadbent, Harry Collett, Emma Thompson, Selena Gomez, Craig Robinson, Rami Malek, Octavia Spencer, Ralph Fiennes, Kumail Nanjiani, John Cena, Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on Jan. 17, 2020.
