Another surprising thing about this visual novel is that, despite her creep-factor and large hand in the scary events that take place in the game, many players still consider Monika the best girl. This list will be looking at why she is and why she isn't.

10 She Is: Monika Is The Poster Girl

Monika is quite literally the first thing that comes to mind when many think about Doki Doki Literature Club!. She's a huge part of the entire experience, and she is arguably the character that you see the most due to her "interference" in the story.

Monika is a character that can't be replaced and is unlike any other in the game. She's not only the poster girl, but she's the main girl of the game, as well.

9 She Isn't: She's Creepily Attached To The Protagonist

Much like the other characters of Doki Doki Literature Club, Monika has her own set of flaws that can sometimes outshine past the good things about her. These flaws are even further amplified when she finds out that she isn't "real" and is a videogame character.

This leads to Monika's actions of actually tampering with the game code itself, even introducing a menu where she is selectable to hang out with during act one.

8 She Is: She's Very Kind

At the beginning before Monika's big discovery, she was a very caring girl. She shows just how considerate she is in her interactions with her friends, as she always shows that she's thinking of others before herself.

Monika wore her kindness on her sleeves and always showed her care for her Literature Club mates, always being sure to compliment each of their writing styles and always comparing them to greats.

7 She Isn't: She Goes To Extremes

After being driven even further insane by her jealously of her club mates taking up all of the attention of the player/protagonist, Monika begins taking matters into her hands in the worst way possible.

Monika started trying to actively make the other girls unattractive and unlikable by altering the code in control of their traits. Examples of this are how she amplified Sayori's depression trait.

6 She Is: She's Confident

One great thing that is instantly noticeable about Monika is that she is confident. While she isn't as talkative as her club mates that players are introduced to, it's easy to see how much her confidence shines through her few words and design.

She instantly gets the admiration of the protagonist due to her confidence and popularity that comes from it. This is one of the traits that drive her to go in a worse direction.

5 She Isn't: She's Manipulative

Due to her confidence going even further into a demented direction and her discovery that's she's actually in a video game, Monika began to exhibit some darker personality traits. As the game went on, she grew to be far more manipulative and controlling than she initially was.

She begins to try to manipulate the protagonist and those around her to get him to like her over the other girls. This is when her obsession begins to take a toll on the entire tone of Doki Doki Literature Club!.

4 She Is: Her Mistakes Aren't Entirely Her Fault

Monika isn't really in full control of the dark things she's doing throughout the game. Her finding out that she isn't real truly takes a toll on her mind due to showing her that she isn't the main character and that she will be relegated to a non-happy ending with the protagonist.

This is one of those things that Monika fans hold onto about her and give them a reason to like and have sympathy for her.

3 She Isn't: Shes A Killer

Once act three comes around Monika is fully transformed into the closest thing to a monster in Doki Doki Literature Club!. Finally cutting her ties to her former friends and realizing that they don't truly exist, Monika fully deletes her friend's files from the game, leaving only her and the player.

2 She Is: She's Self-Aware

Don't get us wrong, there are plenty of reasons to dislike Monika. But, when it comes to Doki Doki Literature Club! characters, she's technically the most self-aware owing to the fact that she knows she's an NPC in a game.

1 She Isn't: She's Just Deranged

The fact still remains that Monika isn't real, no matter how much she wants to be. The character is just so deranged due to this realization that it makes her entirely too creepy to be anything near best girl. No matter how many things she discovers, she will always be just Monika.
