Sono Koe no Anata e or To You Who Owns That Voice is a documentary about the life of the late Dragon Ball Z voice actor Kenji Utsumi.

A 60-second trailer was released on YouTube by the Official Nakachika channel. The documentary is a look back on the life and career of Kenji Utsumi, whose voice is beloved in Japan and beyond. The famous voice actor is best known for his role as Raoh in Fist of the North Star. However, he had many notable roles over his long career, including being the voice of Shenron in Dragon Ball Z and Alex Louis Armstrong in Full Metal Alchemist.

Yuka, a writer from Animate Times, began working on the documentary after learning about Kenji Utsumi during an interview and developing an interest in him. Thanks to her hard work, she assembled a documentary containing interviews with his voice actor friends and live-action re-enactments. Throughout the documentary's filming, Yuka not only learns more about Utsumi's personality and style but also about the history of voice acting and how it became the popular field it is today.

The film, which will release on Sept. 30 in Japan, was directed by Yusuke Sakakibara and produced by production company and pictures. The cast includes Kentaro Utsumi (president of the Ken Production agency) and his wife, voice actor Michiko Nomura (Doraemon). Over a dozen actors announced their involvement with the documentary, including Dragon Ball Z voice-acting talents Masako Nozawa, Kōichi Yamadera, and Akira Kamiya. Other notable interviewees in the documentary are Anri Katsu (Assassination Classroom, Attack on Titan), Mika Kanai (Pokémon, Yokai Watch), Akira Kamiya (City Hunter, Detective Conan), Kishō Taniyama (Attack on Titan, Bungou Stray Dogs), Rikako Aida (Love Live! Sunshine!!), and Hidekatsu Shibata (Fairy Tail, Full Metal Alchemist).

Kenji Utsumi Had a Long Career in Anime

Kenji Utsumi was born on Aug. 26, 1937, in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. He self-founded the agency Ken Production, Co. Ltd. and served as chairman of the company. He was married to fellow voice actor Michiko Nomura, famous for her roles in Speed Racer and Doraemon, until he died in 2013 from peritoneal cancer.

Utsumi had a long and notable career from 1963 until his passing in 2013. His most notable roles included Alex Louis Armstrong in Fullmetal Alchemist, Raoh in Fist of the North Star, and Shenron in the Dragon Ball series. However, he also voiced Commander Red, Recoome, and the Tenkaichi Budōkai announcer in the latter franchise. Aside from his work as an anime voice actor, he also worked on Japanese-language dubs of Hollywood films. For example, he dubbed the voices of iconic actors Steve McQueen and Jack Nicholson. The 3rd annual Seiyu Awards, held in March 2009, honored Utsumi with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his voice acting work.

Fans of Kenji Utsumi are in for a treat as the documentary will be a poignant look back at the life and work of the famous voice actor. Sono Koe no Anata e comes out on Sept. 30 in Japan.
