Coming in hot on the heels of Spider-Man: No Way Home is Doctor Strange's second film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The second trailer for the film recently dropped, and there's a LOT to unpack. New heroes are introduced and old favorites return. Alliances are tested as variants of characters make their appearances and reality as they know it is ripped apart to an extent worse than in WandaVision and No Way Home.

Let's break down the second trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The Scarlet Witch Returns in Doctor Strange 2

wanda dreamwalking

Fresh out of her own multiverse scandal, Wanda Maximoff returns in Doctor Strange's second film, and judging by the trailer, she'll be stepping more into her identity as the Scarlet Witch than ever before. In the trailer, she's seen in the full Scarlet Witch costume, hovering above the ground in the middle of a circle of candles. Strange pays her a visit to ask her about the multiverse, and she tells him, "Vis had his theories [about the multiverse]. He believed it was dangerous." To which Strange replies, "He was right."

Perhaps the most compelling scene featuring the Scarlet Witch is when she comes face-to-face with an alternate version of herself. Wanda is back in the living room of her Westview home, walking toward an alternate version of herself who's kneeling on the ground. This Wanda wears the Scarlet Witch costume, crying as Wanda approaches her and touches her face with a look of empathetic sorrow in her eyes.

Professor X Confirmed to Be in Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

In the middle of the trailer, Doctor Strange walks through an ominous building, flanked by robot guards (that look eerily like Ultron). They lead him to a large room where Strange appears to be standing trial. The camera focuses on him as a voice says, "We should tell him the truth." That voice comes from none other than Patrick Stewart's Professor X/Charles Xavier.

Stewart played Professor X in previous X-Men films that weren't part of the MCU, but with Stewart's appearance, it looks like they'll be canon now. Fans have been speculating that other X-Men characters of Stewart's Marvel universe will be added to the MCU, and now that one is confirmed, that's even more of a possibility. This leads to the next point -- Marvel's Illuminati.

Is Marvel's Illuminati Introduced in Doctor Strange 2?

In the comics, the Illuminati is a secret society of heroes that includes Professor X, Reed Richards, Namor, Black Bolt, Tony Stark and Stephen Strange. Rumors have been circulating about the Illuminati joining the MCU for a while, and with the appearance of one of its members, this film would be the time to do so. It's possible that, in the aforementioned scene, Strange was standing trial before the Illuminati. But besides Professor X, none of the other members have been confirmed. There's also the issue of Tony being dead and Stephen being the one on trial -- unless this Illuminati has variant versions of the two from alternate universes.

Doctor Strange vs. Evil Doctor Strange

Strange Supreme from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Wanda isn't the only one who comes face-to-face with a variant of herself. Doctor Strange appears in a dark room inside what might be the Strange variant's Sanctum Sanctorum. Ominous clouds swirl in the background as two Stephen Stranges walk amidst various objects -- chairs, boxes, musical instruments. The camera gets a close-up on evil Strange as he eerily says, "Things just got out of hand."

There has been speculation that this evil Strange is Strange Supreme, who was introduced in the Disney+ series, What If...? The show's fourth episode centered on a Stephen Strange from an alternate universe who, in an attempt to save his girlfriend, Doctor Christine Palmer, absorbs excessive amounts of power, turning himself into the sinister Strange Supreme. Eventually, he destroys his entire universe. Although this Doctor Strange variant is not confirmed to be the What If...? character, it would make sense considering this Doctor Strange film is traversing the multiverse.

Are Zombies in the Multiverse of Madness?

Another possible What If...? addition is Marvel Zombies. What If...? Episode 5 introduced zombified Marvel characters to the MCU, and, judging by a scene in the trailer, it appears they may be making their live-action debut. At about the 2:05 mark, Doctor Strange levitates in the air with multiple arms growing from his back, his face appearing quite zombie-like.

America Chavez Makes Her First MCU Appearance

The MCU has already introduced several Young Avengers, including Kid Loki, Kate Bishop, Elijah Bradley/Patriot, Tommy/ Wiccan and Billy/Speed, and Miss America seems to be the next addition to the lineup. In the Marvel comics, the teenage America Chavez becomes the hero, Miss America. Chavez wastes no time getting right in the middle of the action, seemingly as an ally to Doctor Strange as they battle against the giant creature, Gargantos.

Is Nova or Captain Marvel in Doctor Strange 2?

At one point in the trailer, a blazing figure zooms through the air, straight at Wanda as the two collide in a brawl. This figure greatly resembles Captain Marvel, but is it Carol Danvers or Monica Rambeau? After all, Rambeau was last seen in WandaVision, where she battled against the Scarlet Witch at one point.

However, it could be a different character altogether. Some fans are convinced this flying figure is Nova, a hero from the Marvel comics not yet in the MCU. Like Captain Marvel, Nova can fly and has superhuman strength, among many other powers, and he can shoot gravimetric beams from his body, which could give him that glowing appearance that Captain Marvel has in flight.

The Return of Baron Mordo

Baron Mordo Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness

Once an ally to Doctor Strange, sorcerer Baron Mordo returns to seek vengeance. After becoming disenfranchised with the Ancient One and the other Masters of the Mystic Arts, he dissented from the group. And, in the end-credits scene of the first Doctor Strange, he was beginning his quest to strip all sorcerers of their powers.

Mordo appears in the trailer around the 1:05 mark, saying to Doctor Strange, "I'm sorry, Stephen. Your desecration of reality will not go unpunished." In the first trailer, Marvel seemed to be setting him up as the main villain; however, this second trailer has brought in so many characters and variants that it's hard to tell who it actually is, or if there even is a main one. Whatever the case, audiences will finally get to see where Mordo has been and where he ends up.

To see the trailer brought the life, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters May 6.
