Doctor Who to Lose Companions Amy and Rory Next Season

The Doctor has been known to go through plenty of companions over the past 48 years, but that doesn't make it any easier to accept when favorites move on from the world of Doctor Who. The BBC announced just today that Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill), the married companions of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith), will be leaving the long-running sci-fi series at the end of next season.

Executive Producer Steven Moffat made the announcement alongside Smith after a screening of this year's Christmas special The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe. Moffat didn't go into any detail, but he did say the Doctor will be getting a new "friend." The next season of Who will run for 14 episodes, all of which will feature Smith in the lead role. More details will be revealed as the season nears production.
