Doctor Who New Year Special Teases the Return of Series' Greatest Menace

The Doctor and her companions will soon be facing an ancient evil that has been buried on Earth for centuries, and this timeless entity has a voice that Doctor Who fans will know all too well.

The latest teaser for the upcoming New Year special is a short one, rehashing Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor telling her companions Graham, Ryan, and Yasmin about the “DNA of the most dangerous creature in the universe.” The trailer ends with a mechanical voice decreeing “exterminate,” which Doctor Who fans will recognize as the unforgiving staccato tone of the Daleks.

Created by writer Terry Nation, the Daleks first appeared in the 1963 Doctor Who serial The Daleks as a race of violent, merciless aliens committed to absolute conformity under their will. They seek to conquer the entire universe and exterminate anything they interpret as inferior.

The Daleks became a consistent foe of the Doctor throughout her many incarnations, especially after they gained time travel technology, allowing them to engage in a violent Time War with the Time Lords. The Daleks are considered one of the greatest and most popular villains in the longstanding BBC show's history, so it’s no surprise they have found a way to cross paths with the current Doctor.
