Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa has found his new companion in Millie Gibson.

Announced by the long-running sci-fi series on DoctorWho.tv, Gibson has joined the cast of Doctor Who as Ruby Sunday, who will join Gatwa's Doctor in the next installment of the series as his companion. Gibson is perhaps best known for her roles as Kellie Neelan on Coronation Street but has also appeared in other dramas such as Butterfly on ITV and Love, Lies and Records on BBC.

"Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor's companion," Gibson said in a statement. "It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have traveled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started."

The Fifteenth Doctor Gets His First Companion

It was announced in May that Sex Education star Gatwa would take over as The Doctor for Season 14, though his first companion was not revealed at the time. In the same statement, Gatwa said Gibson "just is the companion." He continued, "She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor. From the moment she walked into the room she captured all of our attention with her effervescence and then solidified that attention with the sheer torque of her talent. This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot WAIT to sail the universe with Millie!"

Gatwa will take over as The Doctor from Jodie Whittaker, who has held the role since 2018, though it remained unclear how or in what capacity Gatwa would appear until the Thirteenth Doctor regenerated in her final special, "The Power of the Doctor." However, it was fan-favorite Doctor David Tennant who appeared as the Fourteenth iteration of the character, with showrunner Russel T. Davies later confirming that Gatwa would be the Fifteenth Doctor after all.

"It’s the great honour of my job to find the next generation of talent, and Millie shines like a star already," Davies said about The Doctor's new companion. "She’s brilliant, dynamic, clever and a wonderful actor. As a CORONATION STREET fan, I’ve seen Millie survive chases, guns and sieges, but that’s nothing compared to what lies ahead for Ruby Sunday."

Along with the return of Tennant, it was confirmed in May that Catherine Tate would return to Doctor Who for the franchise's 60th anniversary as fan-favorite companion Donna Noble. The details regarding Tate's role remain unknown. Both Tennant and Tate made their final appearances in Doctor Who in the two-part 2010 Christmas special, "The End of Time," which saw the Tenth Doctor erase all of Donna's memories of him as a way to save her life.

Doctor Who will be available to stream on Disney+ in late 2023, with new episodes of the series premiering on the BBC that same year.
