Jodie Whittaker has shared that her final episode of Doctor Who will be full of special treats for die-hard fans of the long-running show.

"It’s one for the Whovians," Whittaker said in an interview with Empire. "It’s a huge treat if you’re a proper fan." She added that the 90-minute episode will be packed with everything that represents the show to fans, saying that "it’s got all the iconic things that you associate with Doctor Who. It’s massive."

Whittaker also shared some behind-the-scenes details about filming her regeneration scene. "I love the dialogue Chris [Chibnall] wrote for my regeneration. It captures my Doctor beautifully," she said. "It’s simple, epic and beautiful." Whittaker also shared that the long sequence was filmed in one take, adding that her real-life emotions almost ruined it. "When I could see the crew was happy with that last shot, that's when my bottom lip started going. I was like, 'Well, they can't say they need another take now because I've fucking lost it!'"

"The Power Of The Doctor" will also mark the final episode for showrunner Chris Chibnall, who is writing the episode, and who took over the show at the same time Whittaker started as the Doctor in 2018 with Series 11. Chibnall and Whittaker have had three seasons together, from 2018 to 2021, and a trilogy of specials across 2022 to wrap up their time on the show. He hands the reigns over to returning showrunner Russel T. Davies, who was responsible for reviving Doctor Who and ran it from the beginning of the reboot in 2005 until 2009 when he passed the job to Steven Moffat.

Whittaker, meanwhile, will be passing British television's most iconic role over to Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa. The two will share the distinctions of being the first female Doctor and the first Black Doctor. As well as the crucial regeneration, the special episode, which is airing as part of the BBC's centenary, will also feature an enormous roster of special guest stars, including former companions from the original series, Sophie Aldred (Ace) and Janet Fielding (Tegan Jovanka), who appear to now be part of UNIT. The villains for the special include Sacha Dhawan reprising his role as The Master, who has teased a major showdown, as well as the deadly Cybermen subset the Cybermasters, and of course, the Daleks.

"The Power of the Doctor" will air in October 2022 on BBC One, with an exact date yet to be announced.
