Doctor Who has a massive fan base, but while there have been thirteen Doctors to date, the list of video games they have appeared in is unusually short. Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality intends to swell that number by one more, and it's also offering players more Doctor for their buck.

Developer Maze Theory, the studio behind Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, dropped a trailer for the upcoming title showing a few minutes of what players can expect. In addition to the Thirteenth Doctor (voiced by Jodie Whittaker), players will experience a look-in by the Tenth Doctor (reprised by David Tennant). Both will advise players as they traverse the universe -- and the cavernous interior of the Tardis itself -- in a quest to save reality from complete and utter destruction.

Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality is an expansion of a previously VR-only experience called Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, developed with the assistance of BBC Studios. Turning Doctor Who into a first-person screwdriver (FPS) title makes sense from the perspective of a VR game, but it appears to work just as well for less confined platforms like PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. Classic Who notes are present everywhere -- weird geometry and physics, varied and sometimes familiar settings calling back to beloved episodes, and there's even a glimpse of a sequence where players roam around as a Dalek. Other classic enemies are in evidence, beyond the Daleks. Cybermen and Weeping Angels are present, plus others that Maze Theory has only hinted at so far.

In Edge of Reality, players attempt to save reality from a "Reality Virus" causing all manner of glitches in time. The new story comes by way of Gavin Collinson, writer of Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins.

No Doctor Who game would be complete without loads of Easter eggs and that's just what Maze Theory is promising players. The release of Edge of Reality's jaunt around the Chaosverse is just a week out and, Doctor Who crossovers being what they are, it's likely that new and returning players will encounter far more than they're expecting.

Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality launches on Oct. 14.
