Ninth Doctor actor Christopher Eccleston wants Doctor Who to be less of a "boys club" and to have greater "engagement with the female."
Speaking with Doctor Who Magazine, Eccleston talked about wanting a Cyberwoman storyline in the mainline Doctor Who series. He said, "The Doctor with a Cyberwoman… that dynamic, feminine element of himself, which he uses so well, his flirtatious nature, his admiration for Gaia and the female would be great with a Cyberwoman. A malign Cyberwoman"
There was a Cyberwoman episode of the Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood, written by current Who showrunner Chris Chibnall. In addition, the 12th Doctor's female companion Bill was temporarily cyberized in the two-part Series 10 finale episodes "World Enough and Time" and "The Doctor Falls."
Eccleston praised the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor but wants the show to go even further with both its on-screen subject matter and its behind-the-scenes staff. He named Emily Davison and Emmeline Pankhurst as examples of overlooked feminist historical figures who could make for interesting Doctor Who storylines.
"Russell T. Davies writes the Doctor as one Doctor; Steven Moffat writes him as another; Rob Shearman writes him, he's another," Eccleston said in regards to the series writers. "Bit of a boys' club, though. We need to address that... we need female writers. It needs to be addressed, particularly as the Doctor has such a pronounced, for want of a better phrase, feminine side, and such an enthusiastic engagement with the female."
Five out of the nine credited writers on Jodie Whittaker's run of Doctor Who so far are women. However, these women are credited with writing or co-writing only five out of the 22 episodes so far; the majority of episodes have been written by showrunner Chris Chibnall. Eight out of the 22 episodes have been directed by women.
Christopher Eccleston played the Doctor for the first season of Doctor Who's revival in 2005. He was replaced with David Tennant after retiring from the role and declined to appear in the 50th anniversary crossover special "The Day of the Doctor." Eccelston recently decided to return to playing the Ninth Doctor for a series of Big Finish audio adventures titled The Ninth Doctor Adventures, which will be released in four parts from May 2021 to February 2022.
