As December marches on, we get ever closer to that great tradition of the season, the "Doctor Who" Christmas special.

As has been the recent custom, the episode will make its broadcast debut on Christmas Day in both the United Kingdom and the United States, on BBC One and BBC America, respectively. Now BBC America has released a new trailer focusing on the show's plot to keep audiences full of festive anticipation.

Yes, after a truly terrible year with no new episodes of "Doctor Who," Peter Capaldi's Doctor is back, announcing his own return at the top of the trailer. We are then introduced to "The Ghost" (Justin Chatwin), the super-powered masked vigilante at the center of the special. He's a hero who appears to have a talent for sweeping ladies off their feet, and as returning companion Nardole (Matt Lucas) puts it, "He seems nice."

The rest of the story focuses on brains in jars. Or are they really alien lifeforms? The Doctor seems to think so. But will he team up with The Ghost to help rescue them? Only time will tell.

The “Doctor Who” Christmas special will air Dec. 25 on BBC One and BBC America, before arriving in select U.S. cinemas on Dec. 27 and 29.
