In the episode, Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor joins with a journalist (Charity Wakefield) and a superhero (Justin Chatwin) to save New York City from some an alien menace. For a second successive year, the Christmas special with also pair Capaldi with comedian Matt Lucas, who first appeared as the bumbling Nardole in the 2015 festive outing "The Husbands of River Song," and is set to reprise the role as in the show's 10th season.

In addition to showing the full 60-minute episode, the Fathom Event screenings will also include two bonus featurettes: "A New Kind of Superhero" focuses on the show's approach to creating a modern superhero, while "Doctor Who Extra" serves as a short making-of documentary.
