Just two days after news surfaced that Glenn Close has joined "Guardians of the Galaxy," now comes word that "Doctor Who" alum Karen Gillan is boarding the Marvel space adventure.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the former companion will play the film's still-unidentified lead female villain.

She joins Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, David Bautista as Drax, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Lee Pace as an unspecified villain and Close as the leader of the Nova Corps. John C. Reilly has been offered the role of Rhomann Dey, described as an Agent Coulson-type character who will serve as a liaison between S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Guardians.

A former model, the 25-year-old Gillan played the wildly popular Amy Pond on BBC's "Doctor Who" from 2010 to 2012.

Directed by James Gunn, "Guardians of the Galaxy" is expected begin filming in late June in London for release on Aug. 1, 2014.
