The alien invaders of “Arrival” were no match for the Sorcerer Supreme, as “Doctor Strange” topped the North American box office for the second weekend in a row.
As expected, the Marvel Studios film will have added another $43 million to its haul by the end of the day, bringing its domestic total to $153 million. DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls” finished second with $35 million, bringing its two-week total to $94 million, while Paramount Pictures’ “Arrival” opened at third with $24 million, blowing past early projections.
According to Deadline, “Doctor Strange” saw its receipts grow by an estimated 18 percent between Friday and Saturday, with 83 percent of the audience giving the film a positive score with PostTrak.
“Doctor Strange” tells the story of world-renowned neurosurgeon Stephen Strange who, after a career-ending car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.
Directed by Scott Derrickson, the film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt, Scott Adkins, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton.
