Doctor Strange Soars Past $490 Million Worldwide

Even as "Doctor Strange" was conjuring another $43 million at the domestic box office, the Marvel Studios film racked up another $60.2 million overseas, lifting its worldwide total to $492.6 million.

Deadline puts that figure into perspective, noting that in its third week of release, director Scott Derrickson's film has already blown past the global totals of "The Incredible Hulk" ($263 million), "Captain America: The First Avenger" ($371 million) and "Thor" ($449 million) -- and it's on its way to challenging "Ant-Man" ($520 million).

"Doctor Strange" has earned $339.96 million in international markets alone, with China leading the way with $83.5 million. The film has experienced a 48-percent dropoff overseas since it began its rollout three weeks ago.

The film ells the story of world-renowned neurosurgeon Stephen Strange who, after a career-ending car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

"Doctor Strange" stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt, Scott Adkins, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton.
