Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is bound to be Marvel Studios' trippiest film to date, and a new promo image offers viewers clues as to just what sort of multiversal madness they can expect.

One of two Empire magazine covers sees Doctor Strange front and center, with Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch just below him and Marvel Cinematic Universe newcomer America Chavez in close proximity. Beyond that, numerous portals offer a look into the Multiverse, with Gargantos' massive tentacle emerging from one as a Tyrannosaurus rex falls just beneath the suction-cup-riddled appendage.

The Doctor Strange sequel is poised to have a major impact on the MCU as a whole. "With an extraordinary cast led by Benedict Cumberbatch, [Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness] really pushes the boundaries of storytelling and connects pieces of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in unexpected ways," Disney CEO Bob Chapek recently explained. "I can't wait for you all to see it."

One of those ways is by introducing the aforementioned America Chavez, a Marvel hero with intrinsic ties to the Multiverse. "I think it comes down to the nature of her powers... and the fact that the title of the film contains the word 'Multiverse' in it," America Chavez co-creator Joe Casey told CBR. "Seems like a no-brainer to me."

Also appearing in Multiverse of Madness is Sir Patrick Stewart's Professor X/Charles Xavier. While the actor was originally tight-lipped about his MCU debut, he finally opened up in late February following his apparent appearance in the film's trailer. "Well, I had my phone turned off as it happened, so I didn’t hear anything," he said. "It wasn’t until the next morning when I woke up and looked at my phone and found that I had been bombarded with responses and that my PR people had sent me reactions that they had detailed and passed onto me… I actually didn’t recognize my own voice, it sounded different. Whether I had a cold or something at the time, I don’t know. But I was astonished, and all they saw was the back of my shoulder, and I think my earlobe, nothing else. There would have been so many connections made. But, uh, it pleased me."

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in theaters May 6.
