After months of rumors, director Sam Raimi finally confirmed he would helm the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This marks a return to Marvel of sorts for the director, given that he previously helmed Sony's Spider-Man trilogy which starred Tobey Maguire in the titular role. As soon as the director's name was attached to the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel, there were fan theories that the film could return to the universe of Raimi's Spider-Man films through the use of the multiverse. This could, in turn, lead to Maguire's return as Spider-Man.

But Maguire's Peter Parker isn't the only character who could make the jump from one universe to the next. After Raimi confirmed his involvement with the Doctor Strange sequel, Bruce Campbell humorously offered his services to portray the MCU film's next villain. The idea is great, and it's clear the actor should play Mysterio.

Bruce Campbell in Spider-Man trilogy

Bruce Campbell appeared in all three of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films in a cameo capacity. And every time, he played a different role. First up, he was the wrestling announcer that gave Spider-Man his name in the first film. In Spider-Man 2, Campbell played an obnoxious usher before he was a waiter that helped Peter propose in the third entry. While his appearances were always meant to be played for laughs, they also contributed to creating a fan-theory about his character. Many fans believed that Campbell was actually playing the same character -- this universe's version of Mysterio.

What's more, it was believed Raimi's fourth Spider-Man film, a movie that unfortunately never went off the ground, could have seen Campbell step into a bigger role as one of the movie's villains. While that never came to pass, Raimi's return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Campbell's willingness to be part of the project offers the perfect opportunity to pay that theory off. The Doctor Strange sequel is already set to take viewers on a trip through the Marvel multiverse -- part of what has fans believing the film could visit the Spider-Man trilogy reality. If that ends up being the case, and Tobey Maguire does make an appearance from his universe, then Campbell could also hail from the same reality as that universe's version of Mysterio.

Mysterio
Mysterio in Spider-man Far From Home

The reveal could work particularly well, given that Jake Gyllenhaal was recently introduced in the MCU as Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Since audiences are already familiar with the character, introducing another version of the villain would make for a fun twist -- especially considering that Gyllenhaal's villain originally introduced himself as being from another Earth. It was a lie, but it could be true of another Mysterio -- after all, it's happened in the 2012 comic miniseries Spider-Men. And since Far From Home's Mysterio also introduced himself as a magician, something that also turned out to be a lie, this could Campbell's version of the villain in a direct confrontation with Doctor Strange -- even if his powers are actually nothing but illusions.

Campbell's appearance could be brief, simply being another cameo that confirms he really was his universe's version of Mysterio, before Doctor Strange promptly defeats him. But whatever the case, it would be pretty great to see the theory finally paid off for fans of Raimi's iconic superhero films.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen. The film is currently scheduled to hit theaters Nov. 5, 2021.
